Description A tutorial showing how to make a Harry Potter style wand out of real wood.

This requires some skill in woodworking, but it is probably the easiest woodworking project you can do if you choose the simple route. If you do something more complex, it can be a lot more challenging. But most of all, they are all fun!

The Pottermore picture is taken from Potterrmore (of course).
The large Pottermore wand was found on the internet. It came from the Pottermore Wiki.
The Bowtruckle illustration is also from the internet, and I have not found its source. If you know who did it, tell me and I'll credit.

This is great! I make wands for friends and to sell at cons, but they're super simple, this will definitely help with detailing! Now I need a woodburning tool... and patience...
(Got myself a nice scar trying to make the Elder Wand)

Yeah, I've got two nice scars on one finger just next to each other. One from a knife and one from an axe. (I really want to do the Elder wand now btw. It would be fun and challenging).

I really like this, it helps me out alot because I stink at wood carving. Oh and I love the part about freinds questioning your sanity! That made me laugh.

I've always wanted my own wand. I've made one for my fiance before, out of polymer clay, but it didn't FEEL right. This tutorial is awesome, thanks!

I have never even considered making one out of any material other than wood. The other materials, such as clay or paper, feel so brittle for some reason. I'd be afraid It'd break if I dropped it, and then you can't have fun with it.

I find polymer clay is pretty resilient, but it doesn't have the same look or weight as wood. Could probably cosplay effectively, it just isn't as... enthralling.

I have never used clay much, so I have no idea. And yeah, they are just show wands. Not fit for real magic ;D

Looks great! When I carve my stuff, I just use a knife, but I might try the rasp and the files too, if I can find them! If I may make a suggestion, I find that varnish for acrylic paints works very well for finishing wands - it seals in the color, protects the wood, but you can still feel the wood through it, so it's not so 'plastic-y.' Same thing for paints - before I bought woodstain, I used markers and ink instead of paint so that the wood absorbed the pigment instead of just letting it sit on top, and that reduces the 'plastic-y' quality of the wand.

Anyway, great tutorial! I will definitely be recommending this!

I have seen your wands around and they're awesome! I find it hard to do fine details with just a knife though.

Thanks for the tips on finishing. As this was just my second wand, I have a lot to learn still. I actually just considered sanding the laquer and paint off the wand, and use a marker to colour it, because some paint have already begun scraping off at the tip for poking stuff (a new wand is like a new relationship. You just can't get enough of it. You have to bring it everywhere and cast spells on everything ).

I know! I'm like that with my own wand I do use a woodburner for some stuff though like swirling patterns and such, and my carving knives for everything else. Do you use a specific brand? I use flexcuts, but I'm interested to know what other people like to use.

I use a Mora knife [link] , which is a Swedish general purpose knife, the handle of which I made myself. it is the knife depicted in the tutorial in the "tools" section.
