A man like Victor deserved a girl like Emily. Victor is also overly afraid of things, bi-xual, a stutterer, a chicken and a racist. That all goes away when he married Victoria. When Victor dies he'll be with Emily again.

so what's the premise behind that movie supposed to be anyway

Ok the short, short version!
Victor's parents are rich, but low-class. Victoria's parents are high-class but flat broke. In order to share the money AND the social standing, the parents arrange to wed their children.
However, both young people are extrememly shy and nervous (despite having hit it off surprisingly well at their first meeting), and at the rehearsal, Victor bungles his lines so badly that he is banished from the church until he can learn to say them properly.
Victor runs into the woods, humiliated, and begins practicing his lines, going so far as to place Victoria's wedding ring on what he thinks is the root of a tree as a finishing touch.
Unfortunately, the root is actually the skeletal finger of a young woman who was killed long ago on her wedding night. Having vowed to wait until another man came to claim her as his own, she awakens and drags him excitedly off to the land of the dead, leaving Victoria bereft in the land of the living, where her parents begin making new wedding plans the moment Victor vanishes.
It's up to Victor to escape to the land of the living, and to his one true love - before she's married off to another man!
