Description
A picture I took the other day of my pet African Giant Millipede (Archispirostreptus Gigas), Leslie, eating dogfood out of my hand. He's such a sweetie >w<. He's about 20cm long at the moment, and could grow another 10cm or so more than that. And I know he has mites. Apparently pretty much every archispirostreptus gigas in the world seems to have mites. They dont do him any harm, or me, and I wont be removing them until he has them in copious amounts, since it'd be a pretty fruitless endeavour. I like to think he has a co-habitation thing going with them. Like me and my fleas
And before anyone calls him an insect, he's not, he's a myriapod. I hate it when people call them insects ¬¬.

Aww, lucky! Would you happen to know of a breeder for these? It's illegal to import the giant African millipedes now.

Sweet! I had two, myself.. first Nero, and when she died, my love surprised me with another. Since I recieved her as a St. Valentine's Day gift, I named her Freya, but sadly, she too has since passed on. Leslie looks just as friendly as my leggy ladies.. Nero didn't have mites but Freya had a few -- they are harmless, beneficial actually, but I did remove some of them because they were a bit annoying.

That's new, dare I ask how you obtained Leslie?
Actually better question, why are you feeding him dogfood? ¬¬

Because he aspires to be like Dante
It's to keep his protein up, though now I'm giving him bonemeal I may not have to give him it as often.
I bought him over the interwebs :3.
Mum's still aghast that I've managed to keep my room clean, which was the condition for getting him.
He needs to meet Auntie Charl at some point :3.
Ah miss yew D:
I shall have to call you tomorrow, if that's okay. I'm coming home about 1pm due to the amazingness of free periods, and I can squeal all about my new baby boy then . Who isn't really a baby, and is certainly not human

He is >W<. And awesome! I contemplated purchasing a snake at one point, but screeches of 'it'll escape and eat your gerbil and get eaten by the dog!' from my mum dissuaded me somewhat. I'm not allowed anything even remotely carnivorous till I've moved out of the house. But I want to work with invertebrates when i'm older anyway, so Leslie really is the perfect pet :3.

I think the reason people might call them insects because of the exoskeleton. Bypassing the whole more than six legs thing which is kind of important.
At the very least they are invertebrates .
He seems oddly adorable.

Not sure. Pretty much any millipede. I'd assume molluscs to be pretty tame also, along with perhaps other slow moving herbivorous invertebrates, like stick insects.

He's great :3. African Giant Millipedes are slow moving and docile, so he isnt vicious and isnt very likely to escape . He'll eat pretty much any fruit or veg, plus pet food for protein. The only problem I can think of with them is that they secrete an irritant when they feel threatened, but so long as you wash your hands after handling them and so dont get any in your mouth or eyes then that's fine too
