Description
Robyn had double checked the bags, the green sleeping roll was securely strapped to the saddle, a comfortable dark blue blanket and creamy sheepskin pad on Petrichor's back. The mostly white mare had watched, her blue eyes twinkling with curiosity as she watched the female human mutter to herself. Dark leather and golden metal gleamed, the tack was not new, but not worn down, comfortable was the word Robyn would use to describe it, everything had to last, to be comfortable, and usable many times over if possible. With a slight jingle Robyn finally slid the dark leather bridle with its golden bits over Petri's black ears, straightening the mare's forelock carefully. Robyn let out a breath, resting her forehead against the mare's. Petri did not move, her ears pricked, the human was troubled, she could tell that much from the way the girl was acting. About what though? Petri knew there was something wrong, something horribly wrong with the land, it felt .. dead, it wasn't dead though, the grass still grew, the trees still had their leaves, but it was quiet. Unnervingly so at times, the sound of the other horses and humans had been the only thing for a while now, no birds chirping, no squirrels chattering and even the bugs were absent. Now even the noise of horses and other humans had faded away. The scents were still here though, faint but potent reminders of what had been, of the place many of the horses had called home for a few years now. For some of the people this had been all they knew, Robyn doubted anyone would stay behind though, the queen, the breeding master, everybody was leaving and so were the horses.
Sometimes she wondered if the horses could have known first that this would be happening, perhaps the wild ones first, the other animals certainly seemed to. This world was dead, that seemed to be all there was too it, at least if you didn't know otherwise. It was time to leave, the portal was hopefully ready. Robyn couldn't help but be excited to see all of the other Nordanners and people though as much as she hated too leave this place behind.
Petri's pasture mates had all been moved already, the house and barn were clear of anything that could be taken, Robyn's heart ached seeing the empty white washed fences, the red barn doors swung open with no need to close them in the hurry that had been the past few days. After the message had come, well no one had wanted to take any chances. Robyn turned away from Petri, her footsteps echoing in the empty barn, she untied the rope, took the brush she had been using for Petri to make her coat shine. She didn't really know why, the journey ahead would cover the mare in mud, and with grass stains.
She patted the bags of supplies and lead Petri out of the barn carefully swinging the red and white doors closed behind her. With tears in her eyes she swung up into the saddle. "Goodbye" she whispered, clucking for Petri to go forward.
Obediently the mare started trotting down the long road that would eventually lead to what would hopefully become their new home.
You say tomorrow is the last day? Time to finish the bg in an hour!
