Description
PACHAKUTI (a.k.a Pachakutiq or Pachacutec) means "he who changes the earth" or "reformer of the world" in Runa Simi (the Kichwa / Quechua language. Runa Simi means "language of the people" in that language), and refers to the ninth ruler of Qusqu / Cuzco (the capital of the Inca), also the founder & first ruler of the Tawantinsuyu ("four corners", the name of the Inca Empire).Born as Cusi Yupanqui, when he was around his twenties, ca. 1438, the kingdom of Qusqu, home of the Inka (or Inca, the name of a group of Kichwa people from Qusqu, that means Son of the Sun, or ruler. Inti is the Sun god from which the lineage of Inca nobles was said to descend from) was under attack by the Chankas. The Chankas are another group of Kichwa people, and then, traditional enemies of Qusqu, who were demanding the surrender of Qusi's father, Wiracocha Inca (or Huiracocha / Wiracocha Inca - originally named Hatun Tupaq. Wiraqucha is the name of the creator god in traditional Kichwa cosmology and means "fat / foam of the sea"), the Inca ruler at the time.Wiracocha originally chose Urqu, Qusi's brother, to rule after him. But when the Chanka surrounded Qusqu, both Urqu and Huiraqocha left the city's nearby region, while Qusi decided to stay.
In 1438, in Yawarpampa ("Field of Blood"), next to Qusqu, Qusi would lead the Inka to victory and become known as Pachakuti - he who changes the Earth. Legends about the Inca victory tell that, in order to defeat the greater army of Chankas, Pachakuti was aided by stone soldiers known as PURURAUCA - transformed from stones he and his forces lined up across Yawarpampa to mislead the Chankas. After that victory, Qusqu became a dominant power in the region, and Pachakuti would expand its power over what would be known as the Tawantinsuyu, the greatest ancient empire of what's nowadays South America.
In 1472, one of his sons, Tupaq Yupanqui, would succeed him and carry the expansion for the Tawantinsuyu, solidifying their power after defeating the Chimú, another great civilization from northern Peru.
