Description
Mort Drucker - My earliest comic book influence. I regularly picked up MAD magazine for years before I picked up my very first "super hero" comic book, and the main reason for buying MAD was for Drucker's inspired movie parodies! To this day, whenever I have to draw a likeness, it's all Mort! I also still regularly use many of his deceptively loose rendering cyphers. Books to look for: Mort Drucker's MAD Show-Stoppers, Familiar Faces: The Art of Mort Drucker, & MAD About the Movies.Arthur Adams - Still my most dominant and noticeable influence! Ever since I laid my eyes on X-MEN Annual #12, I've been hooked! Most noticeable still in my style is his dynamics, body positioning, facial expressions and understructure. Books to look for: Arthur Adams: X-MEN LEGENDS 3 & Longshot.
Jim Lee - Having been fortunate enough to have mentored under Jim Lee first hand, you can still see a very obvious influence in my work to this day. Most notably, in my storytelling and rendering of figures and backgrounds, and the kinetic speed at which the artwork appears to be produced. Favorite Jim Lee books: X-MEN Visionaries: Jim Lee, X-Tinction Agenda, & BATMAN: HUSH.
DISNEY - Originally thinking for many years that I would be an animator before I ever considered the idea of being a comic book artist, the classic and modern age animated features of Walt Disney Studios remains a dominant influence on my approach to art! Most prominently, the work of:
Marc Davis - Marc's designs of both the Princess and Maleficent from "Sleeping Beauty" remain two of my all time favorites! Not to mention his design and animation of Tinkerbell! Marc's artwork came to define the BEST in Disney females, and probably still hasn't been topped to this day!
Fred (Freddy) Moore - You most likely wouldn't have had a Marc Davis girl if Fred Moore hadn't defined his vision of the "Freddy Moore Girl" first! His signature "girly" art and animation can be seen in the shorts "All the Cats Join In" in Make Mine Music, "Casey Bats Again", The "centaurettes" in Fantasia, and my personal favorites, the mermaids in Perter Pan!
Milt Kahl - His graphic, angular and often lanky character designs lend themselves to the aesthetics of my figures very well. An older influence that I've only recently come to revisit and reincorporate. Some of my favorites: Roger and Anita from 101 Dalmatians, Shere Khan and King Louie in The Jungle Book, and his work in The Aristocats and The Sword in the Stone. Any doubters should simply google "Milt Kahl" and "Hands" and be WOWED by the jpeg compilations that pop up!
Great Disney related books: The Illusion of Life, DRAWN to LIFE Vol 1 & 2, and Walt Disney's Nine old Men. And if you're REALLY lucky!!... Les HΓ©roΓ―nes Disney.
Phew! ... to be continued...

Love that you have such a strong knowledge and grounding in Disney, it makes you stand out. The two I see strongest in you is Drucker and Art Adams, which is a great combo to have. People don't give you near enough props for your characture abilities. You are so good at likenesses! Oh, and purty girls. Thanks for posting this J.

I'm surprised to see a lot of the same things that inspire me here. There are differences of course. Replace Masamune with Rumiko Takahashi for instance >D But Disney in particular and G.I. Joe (Lady Jay was my hero as a little girl). That's just awesome to me. In turn your work on Gen13 is one of my big influences as well. And those issues were always my favorites ^.^

I see all of these in your work. You've always been on my list, Sir... well, since you hit the scene at least. LOL
I need to get you to do an Elvgren style pin-up of Terri's Star Wars character. I asked her who she would like it done by, she said you without hesitation... plus we need to do Disney again. LOL

How about you draw a comic now and then so some of the new little kids could be inspired by you again!

I see Chuck Jones up there. Mad props!! I was watching the "Cat in the Hat" cartoon with Gwen, and he was attached to it....truly awesome artist. His work on Tom & Jerry and the old Looney Tunes/ Merry Melodies stuff was some of my favorite stuff ever!
And yes, Sleeping Beauty had SO MUCH going for it. I watched it with my daughter (notice how much she pops up in conversation?), and noticed all the backgrounds and things I didn't notice when I was a child. It really is a breathtakingly animated film!

GREAT SCOTT!!
This is madn... no, wait, wrong movie.
Living in the backwater regions of Europe I practically grew up on old comics, I think I still have a bunch of them drawn by Arthur Adams. Ah, the memories.
How'd you come across Shirow though? Ghost in the Shell, am I right?

Hi Scott - I'm an aspiring artist who also grew up with the same influnces as you. In the Masamune Shirow influence - did you like or follow the Appleseed series? I love that series and his work ever since the mid 80's. It's nice to see you like it too.
Hey, can you do a tutorial page on how you draw your lips? I've been trying to trace your lines on the lips and have no luck matching them. Even better, how you get the eyes to communicate the different expressions? Just wondering. Your style is so beautiful and I would love to learn.
Thanks,

it's great to see your influences man (especially seeing the ones that we share), and GREAT find with the Chuck Jones pic, the big dog/little kitty cartoons aren't usually the first thing that pops into people's minds.
