All thoughts here on in are my own and do not represent that of the artist, I have come to my own conclusions on this piece and of what it may mean. (just a little disclaimer type thing)
In its basic form this piece is very simple, a black and white portrait of a sitting woman. What makes it interesting is the questions it raises. And what answers can we derive from it due to how the picture has been taken and edited.
The artist has decided to single this woman out, from this angle we can not tell where she is, if its busy there or if she is alone, this piece is of her and only her. And the deductions of colour take away some of the initial impact of colour that may have been on her clothes, or the building around us, so now we search for another outlet of emotion and meaning, namely, her body.
We look at the way she holds her self, how she sits, her facial expression. why did the photographer choose this moment when she has positioned her self in this way? what is significant about it?
Looking at her face, she looks tired, but not from physicality, from emotion. It seems to me that she is tired of an emotion.
She keeps her body closed to the world, hiding her hands from whom ever may look. To me this says she is sad, tired of being sad, and that she wants to be alone, away from everything else. In this photograph the photographer seems to have given that to her, by separating her from everything else she has the hiding spot she desired.
Does this mean the photographer feels sad for her, pity's her? I think pity is certainly not rite, as we can tell from the angle that she is raised above the camera and thus the photographer has giving her an elevated status, she is more important than the photographer, so maybe he feels she is important, or the emotion she feels is important and so needs to be shown to the world.
This piece is like a gift to this woman that she may never know about, its quiet, and it reflects her emotions without making a show of her or mocking her, it gently imply's the importance of one persons emotion to the rest of the world, and in that way it is not only beautiful, but a lesson to all those who view it.
