Description
Shanghai Sunrise is a beautiful image, until you realize that the haze is not morning mist, it is the terribly polluted air produced by China's filthy coal power plants. There are some cities in China that almost never see direct sunlight, due to the constant coal smog. This one is my contribution to environmentalism. Beauty from ugliness.Related content

It was so cool to visit a place so far away, and so amazingly different than the US. But in many ways, it was also very similar. Capitalism was running rampant and city people had cell phones and laptops. That was back in 2000. Shanghai is a great city in any case.

*chuckles* Yeah, well capitalism sticks its thumb in everywhere... Singapore's actually pretty good in terms of appearence. Very, very clean place to visit. Very green and lovely.

I was looking for more of your "China" shots. My CT technician (David) said you were an inspiration and had some great shots of the Great Wall. I am going for the first time this summer and am counting down the day.
By the way... I can see why he admires you work/quality.

Hi, thanks for the kind words. Thanks to David too. Is this David Gaydos by any chance? Here are some more china shots that I have on another site, you will get a message that you are leaving DA:

Wow... I really like the second link. It gets me excited for the adventure and people I am about to meet. The serenity of the first is cool too.
As for the last name... I just know him as "David" He has been my technician for about 7 years. Funny thing is I just found out he is he had a photo major at Bradley so it's been fun to talk to someone with a new perspective about art. Anyway... he works at Delnor... hopefully these couple of tips helps clarify.
Keep up the great work. David seemed to really admire your journey and I can see why-

Yes, same Dave He's a good friend of mine.
If you go to China, you will be in awe of so many things about that amazing country. I would go back, although there are so many other places I need to go too.
Nice talking with you!

Some days it was super nice there for me too. But right now, the economy there is really bad and the factories are probably not running at full capacity- which might be helping the air too. Anyway, enjoy your time in that great city. Hope I get back there one day!

mmm that makes sense, well lucky I came at this time then... although I do have to sweep my apartment a LOT more than I would have to at home in the U.S. supposedly its soot.

Soot in your apartment doesn't sound like good air quality at all! I see you are from Wisconsin, me too. What is a Wisconsin girl doing living so very far from home? Living in Shanghai has to be quite an adventure at your age. It was an adventure for me when I was much older, but I do remember feeling homesick.

but at least they have blue sky! And its much better than Beijing, I cant believe they had athletes there... I think its better in Shanghai because of the breeze from the sea.
I'm here in China because I saved up my money for 2 years after art school and I have wanted to go since I was a kid, so I did. I do have a bit more connections here than most people however

Heh I think during the summer I saw the blue sky...once. The rest of the days the sky was covered completely with smog.
Awesome picture, nice plug about the environment~

Thanks for illustrating my point with an eye-witness account! It's so sad that people have to live in those conditions. When I was in Xian, it was so dark that cars all had their headlights on at noon, no storm, just smog. The smog had a terrible taste in one's mouth, it's gotta be killing people by the millions, though slowly. I don't think people there realize that much of the world still has clear beautiful air and stars in the sky. But the way it is going we will all be in those conditions soon. Why do you stay there if I may ask? Could you get a job somewhere with better air?

C3zu In reply to JamesBrey [2008-04-28 00:09:48 +0000 UTC]
Well the fact of the matter is, the places that offer better jobs are the cities. The more polluted and nasty generally means the more workers are needed. To keep yourself (and for some, their families back home) fed and educated that's what you gotta do :/.
Getting a job somewhere else sounds awesome, but it's not something I can risk doing anytime soon (I'm already pretty well off in comparison). Just stopping your income and going somewhere where there is no support is scary o_o;;. Breathing in this nasty stuff isn't pleasant either, but at least I have food.
And really it's defiantly not killing "slowly", don't forget most people around here smokes as well. We're all walking chimneys around here. Most parents I know work to send their kids to "cleaner and better" places. After all at least the kids should live somewhere clean and beautiful .

Well, at least there is one clear and easy thing you can do for your health, quit the cancer sticks. The world needs bright people like you to stay around as long as possible! Your government doesn't seem to care about the health of the population at all, so you gotta take care of yourself and set a good example for the children. The best of luck, and I very much enjoyed talking to you!

I do the same about racist jokes.. like this bouncer wouldn't let any people with dark skin in.. so I held up one of those scales you use to test paper against him.. "hmmm nope, not quite white either, more like a pinkish bouquet.. sorry dude" hillarious..
