I was quite pleased with this concept, and also give Shining Armor a bit of the badassery that he seems to be missing in many of the episodes of this show. Not to say I don't enjoy his characterization, but I want to think the Captain of the Royal Guard is also good at kicking some ass, and driving motorbikes.

He NEVER seems to get enough credit either in the fandom or writing staff, really. 90% of the time, he's either joke fodder (sometimes for more adult topics that wouldn't be acceptable with other characters) or depicted as stuck in his teenage nerd phase of life (tabletop gaming references and the like).
The best way, I think, is to take a more nuanced approach. As he is Twilight's older brother, it's reasonable to assume that many of Twilight's personality quirks are shared with him, and there's also the fact that characters like Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Peter Parker (Spider-Man) prove that "badass" and "nerdy" aren't mutually exclusive character interpretations.
