Pol-Rua is one of the more prolific artists over at the Mutants and Masterminds DeviantArt group [link] .
Technique:
Clean up original drawing in Photoshop (removing any artifacts/extra marks)
Import into Illustrator
Auto-Trace raster drawing into vectors
Export to Photoshop
Color, texture, and add shadows, background, etc.

That said, I had no problem with your original colouring.
It's not how I see him, but I'm always keen to see your interpretations.

The browns were my first choice/attempt/draft of colors, but I was also using the browns for skin/fur so there were just too many brown colors and I changed the colors to blues for some contrast. Now that the skin/fur is blackish, the browns look good.
