Description
Anyone browsing the Resources & Stock Images gallery will have noticed the growing epidemic of 'Renders'. This is the pretentious new name for cutting out found images, and uploading them as stock, to be used in things like wallpapers and 'GFX' (basically someone's artwork made a lot smaller). As a general artistic term 'rendering' is defined as creating shading and texturing an image.
In a digital-art 3D context it is the method of generating an image from a three dimensional computer model.
Exactly how this bastardisation of the term 'render' began is unclear, but it probably started with people trying to take credit for 3D rendered artwork from games like Final Fantasy.
People seem to believe that using renders is 'rendering' in the same way that using paint is 'painting'. Now, bizarrely, the term is being applied to images that were never even renders to begin with such as photographs of celebrities.
Images from artists on this site are being used too, often after having been uploaded to render sites like Zerochan without permission. Render sites are not legitimate sources of stock images.
By this new definition of rendering, Pixar make all of their animation by cutting out images they found on the net!

Unfortunately the people making these things don't believe what they are doing is wrong. They see anime pictures on Google, and think they can pluck them like apples off a tree.

Many GFX forums call stock images that have been cut out from an original image a "render". But they have more terms for "true renders". Like C4D Renders and stuff~
It's a term that was born in the GFX communities. We editors just learn from the "pro's" who told us that these images are called "render" :/

Hear, hear!
I remember last Summer, a well-known "renderizer" got caught for stealing the art of a deviant with a decent sized following and let's just say said "renderizer" is no longer on this site. It was pretty good for the time being, but lo and behold, more "renders" kept piling into the site. At least now, most of those people don't use things from dA. HOWEVER, Pixiv is still a huge target for people to steal artwork...

I haven't been in DA for a while now and seeing 'rendering' being use as a term for such bullshit, makes me and probably any other VFX artist facepalm...
Anyways, the rendering term is not only used in 3D. In CG world rendering is the calculations the computer does in order to produce the final image. There's no difference if the image produced is a 3D or 2D render. For example: you've applied a new texture on your painting and you are waiting till the image loads with the new texture on top. What your computer does is runs through its set of calculations and produces or renders out the final image: it adds the paining with the texture. Same in 3D, you add a shader to the model and when you click render, the program calculates the final result!
A good examples of the rendering term used in 2D art is in compositing (with using such programs as nuke etc).

I don't mind renders if it's like, "oh, I took the stock image's white background out so people that do photomanip can use it!" or "I asked the original artist of this if I could snip out the character and keep it on DA for use on a sig or something and credited them so sigmakers can also credit them" but I believe that they should go into scraps and not into their main gallery, since it's not actually a work of their own art.
I don't know how far you've gotten into English (assuming you've ever even taken an English class) but it is a morphing language. Definitions of words change and get added onto all the time. Just because YOU don't like it doesn't mean it isn't going to happen. Now "rendering" means turning something 3D into 2D, causing something (as in, rendering one unconscious), doing something (as in, rendering a service), to provide something (like y'know aid), etc. and cutting shit out. No word in the English language has one specific meaning, and you are an ignorant fool if you believe that any of them do.
Also, I am a maker of signatures and I can say for a fact that it's not the case that "they've already done most of the work". Instead of doing what you guys think all of us do, I take the original image, usually a stock image from whatever I'd like to use so I don't hurt anyone's feelings, otherwise I ask for permission, I cut it out, then I give it a background.. some effects, foreground, border and text. You can sit there and bitch and call me a thief and tell me that it's not artistic all you like. But it takes an eye for color and design that people take for granted. My opinion will never change.
The main problem that I have with it is that people need to ASK and CREDIT the original artist. But they don't. It's annoying, and it's complete bullshit.
Also, while it's not really art, you do have to put some effort into doing it correctly or it looks like shit. It's not just like, "MAGIC WAAAAAND!" BAM. DONE. NOW IS PERFEYCT.

I've already posted this on the other stamps but dammit I want to share my goddamn opinion. So shoot me, ya damn anti-constitutional rights-ists.

What you are doing is digital glitter and scissors. Applying terms like 'GFX' and 'Render', to make it sound cooler, just makes it seem even more pathetic.
Having been born in England I have a pretty good grasp of the English language thanks.

"GFX" and "Render" are not to make it "sound cooler". Graphics aren't necessarily just glitter that someone throws onto something. We're not preschoolers, and just because you don't like what we (signature-makers) do doesn't make it not artistic. When I borrow (with consent), for example, an artistic piece that someone else has created and is proud of, I draw the background myself, and I hand-draw the effects. I don't take some stock brush and smash it onto it like a preschooler. I draw what looks nice as a sig. I don't share them with others or put them up for "free use" because that would be a kick in the gut to the artist of the original piece.
I've already stated that rendering is not artistic. That's something that I agree with.
Now, you've got your opinion and I've got mine, and neither of us is likely to change theirs soon, but I'm glad that we both got to share.
The statement about English was not to stab at you personally, but was just to point out the evolutionary nature of the language.
I apologize if I have offended you.

It's caused from applications like gimp using the word "render" rather than save

Interesting, I hadn't seen that. But it's still used in the legitimate context of making an image (the file) rather than cutting an image up.
Even 'renderers' can't seem to decide what the word means: They refer to the original unedited image as a render, and some claim that simply making an image smaller is rendering.

In my opinion, a render is an item made using a 3D program. I really wish they would specifically address this conundrum with a link to a new FAQ & clear it up.

Rendering can also be fixing imperfections in images and editing them like what you see in photoshop art, but only when you have permission to do it. Personally, cutting something out and removing the background is not artistic in any sense.

That's 'post-work','retouching' or 'photo-retouching'. The term 'rendering' relates more to shading and texture.
