Description "Actions speak louder than words..."

For my photography concentration on that concept. I am using mimes because they are personifications of silence. They have nothing but actions to speak with. Here, the student raising his hand is saying, "I care about my future!" and the mimes sleeping in class say, "I don't." Even the teacher is saying something with his body language. "I care about the future of this country. I teach to make a difference." Volunteering, trying to understand, is more important than getting the correct answer.

I wanted this in the Photography-Conceptual category, but it is a Political statement as well. I hate the "No Child Left Behind" program. All it does is push the people who don't try (the sleeping mimes) through school. "Here! You didn't do shit all your high schol career, but here's a diploma anyway!"

Why in Photomanipulation?
1. Desaturated (except for their arms and necks)
2. Brightness/Contrast adjustment
3. Gradient added to the top for balance

i have to agree with Bachlakoff on the size of the photo. it's too blurry at this size. i also like to show photos at the full size, but i realized that a lot of times, shrinking it a bit will make it "sharper".

also, to add to what Bachlakoff said, maybe you should try writing the phrase "no child left behind" on the chalkboard to give it a little more meaning.

still, great concept. the mimes are awesome. ^_^

I don't really give a hit about the No Child Left Behind program, our country is going to hell anyway. I only added that blurb at the bottom so I wouldn't be yelled at for having it in the wrong category. Ignore that stuff about the American education system. The real message is Actions Speak Louder Than Words. And writing anything about the program on the blackboard would make it too obvious anyway. Why can't I have artwork that has personal feelings and messages built into it without them being obvious? Why can't my art be like REM's music? Or The Smiths'? They can write songs that say "Shoplifters of the world, unite and take over" when what they really mean is "People who aren't perfect, but aren't evil should be the real leaders of the world." Why can't I make pictures of cats sitting on window sills and call them DEATH?

This piece dosen't need any more meaning. Why don't people try THINKING on their OWN for once instead of me giving them all the answers in the picture?

A little critique etiquette: Start out with something positive or you'll only make the person you're critiquing angry. Chris (Bachlakoff) is my friend, but he was still wrong to ONLY point out negative things about the piece. Start with something positive, THEN make your suggestions about how to improve it and then END with something else that's positive.

Thanks for your comment and the favorite.

Sorry for being bitchy.

i'm sorry if i offended you. actually, before i read the description, i understood the photo and the title. actions speak louder than words is a very important and powerful concept. i really liked your idea. if i didn't like it i wouldn't have fav'd it or even commented on it. i would've just skipped it.

also, i didn't know that Chris was your friend, and so when i read your response to his comment, i thought you were mad at him, so i tried to further explain them to show you that it wasn't just him and that maybe he had a valid point.

anyways, i guess i was just confused by the description. and yes, i'm sure some people would have said something if you had put it in the political category without your description.

anyways, sorry if i upset you.

Thanks. I'm sorry I was a bit mean earlier. I had a bad day at school. That dosen't excuse me, however. I'm glad you understood the piece and my point of view. Thanks again.

1. It's always been a bit bothersome that you upload pictures that are huge at full view. Keep a copy of the original for sure, you can print out bigger later that way, but for DA I think you should shrink the finished version down to something not more than 1000 pixels on the largest side.

2. When I look at the small version of the pic it looks nice, but upon the closer inspection the photoshoping looks quite rushed: edges of arms, necks... just wherever there's a border between color and black and white, it looks sloppy. I would recomend using a hard brush for the bigger areas where there are just chunks of flesh to keep colored, and then as you get closer to the edges use a soft brush and keep shrinking the size of it.

3. Why did you make one mime with black lips and keep the red in the other?

4a. If you can, I would also recomend retaking this photo. The theme is "actions speak louder than words" but I wouldn't have been able to catch the meaning if I hadn't read the description for the photo. The mime in the back was yawning, yeah, but you can still pick up knowledge from class even if you're bored. It would be better if you had him actually sleeping.

4b. For the "no child left behind" issue I had no idea you were even speaking to this. The title (which gives people a big step in the right direction when trying to interprety a piece) is only the name of your concentration. Not sure if you're giving it a different title back in Florida, but as far as the internets go it's not helpful. Even when I zoomed in and read the board, that gave me no indication it was about the NCLB program. There's nothing at all to suggest either that, or that the yawning student is going to pass the class regardless of his participation.

Hope this is helpful, don't wanna sound like an ass, just giving some advance critique. I like the concept and where you're going, it just needs some work.

This turned out really neat overall I think. The concept is as funny as it is sad (I dont believe in the no child left behind program either). The color balancing is good. The white seems to glow without overpowering the photo. My only nitpick is the face paint... was it added later in PS? There seems to be a hard edge on all the face painting that seems to really jump out at me and keeps drawing my eye to it. Other than that, I like how this turned out.

No, the face paint was actually on them. [link] The original was in color and I desaturated everything BUT their skin tones. I've been nitpicking at that too, but I needed it finished. There are a million better things to nitpick about. The hard line was the least of my worries because if the facepaint is applied right, there's SUPPOSED to be a hard line.
