Description Here's a close-up of the cheesy horror movie poster that I created for my Wolfman Mac piece.

I'd wanted to create my own take on the 60's beach party flicks for a long time, and mashing it up with the schlocky horror genre of the same era was too good to pass up. So when I got the chance to draw a pin-up for the Wolfman Mac comic, it gave me the perfect excuse to finally execute my idea.

I first drew the couple dancing in the foreground in my sketchbook. Originally it was just going to be a rough sketch, but I liked the way it turned out, so I decided to use it for the poster. I drew the rest of the scene on bristol board, then cut and pasted the dancers into the scene later on. This entire piece was later cut and pasted into the larger Wolfman Mac pic, which I also drew separately.

I really wanted to capture the more kitchy, corny aspects of 60's pop culture, which is why I used the term "Hootenanny", very popular with the early 60's folk music scene. I also tried to simulate the more outrageous looks of the teenagers of that era, coupled with fun, erratic dance moves.

The monster I created is typical of me: big, shaggy, slobbery and ferocious beasts. Love 'em. Love drawing 'em. While I tried to make this an original creature, inevitably I was inspired in three parts: Jim Henson's Muppets, Sid and Marty Kroffts' lesser yet weirder puppet menagerie, and My Pet Monster.

I really wanted to do a Dead Duck story featuring a beach party movie/monster massacre, and this poster may well serve as the basis for that story when the time comes!

Thanks, Chad! I was watching a beach movie when I drew that character, and those huge, shellacked hornets nests the ladies sported back then was irresistible to draw!
