Description
In short...this was me over the past three weeks or so.Some of you may have noticed that I haven't posted any artwork as of late, and it's because I've been ridiculously busy at work. I've actually been working on animations for a rather important client, and while laborious and time/creative energy consuming, I've been able to dramatically improve my Sketchup animating skills in the past month alone. This animation is the result of about two-three hours of work today while watching the Mythbusters marathon with my dad. Since the big project is more or less done, expect new art, models and animations from me in the future.
As always, enjoy!

From a design perspective, this piece is extremely well done. The way the machine operates is absolutely believable, and it doesn't look like short cuts were taken on the technical aspects of making the machine operate. I could imagine an engineer designing this without significant difficulty.
That being said, the concept is somewhat pedestrian, and the operation of the machine could be done in a simpler way. However, since (I imagine) this piece is a technology demonstrator (i.e. just showing how the machine works) I don't see this as a problem. Further, the pedestrian nature does lead to convincing realism.

As an experimental piece in animation it is incredible. Both stunning, believable and inspiring.
My only criticism is what/how is such a device necessary?
How 'bout a simple treadmill and static gripper arms? But again, that makes me think, perhaps it is holding/moving something much, much, MUCH heavier than a box that size would justify with normal materials. Perhaps it's a container for a tiny piece of Neutronium or some kind of hybrid metal / material made from it? Though again it'd be hard to keep Neutronium in anything other than the conditions it forms in, such as a neutron star or the core of a Jupiter size planet.
But I'm adding too much to a KISS test of software/animatione.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

Well, my thoughts when I was building this was that it was an Aperture Labs-esque experiment in which a simple robotic arm was given a mundane repetitive task to do after being granted highly advanced AI. Sort of a "how long till he goes insane" experiment. Yes, a simple crane or conveyor would have worked better, but wouldn't have been nearly as much fun to animate. Thanks for the feedback!

You need third-party plugins to do it, although you can create simple fly-through animations with stock Sketchup. I used a plugin called SU Animate.

It can be tricky, and animating all the parts as they move away from their origins is kinda difficult, but rewarding in the end! Might do something more complex next!

I wanted to spruce it up a bit, there are a bunch of pivots and axises that I didn't use in the original, and do now

The SU animate plugin for Sketchup makes it relatively intuitive, if not easy. You should give it a try! You pretty much just draw where and what you want the model parts to do.

It's a plugin for Google Sketchup, called SU Animate. You can download it here: [link]
