Description As of January 31, 2009, it's been ten years since "Family Guy" made its debut on FOX. And oh boy, what a difference a decade makes.

I won't try to pretend that I'm still entertained by this show, because I'm not. I won't even try to paint a picture of the first three seasons as the perfect example of what the show could be, because that's not true either (even the so-called "glory years" tended to be mediocre at best). But at least in the spirit of Seth MacFarlane's trademark cutaways to things that are only tangentially related to what's going on, I can remember the time, way back in 1999, when these characters showed promise.

What'll the next ten years bring? I'm not sure I want to think about that...

It's just one type of paint in the giant picture of TV today. And boy, do I hate that picture.

You know, your comment about Meg was a good one. I mean, when everyone on the show (EVERYONE) treats one of the main characters of the show with constant dismissal and cruelty... something has gone awry.

The show really has gone downhill. It used to be funny but now it just seems offensive and mean spirited. It doesn't have any class at all. There is a difference between being edgy and actually being funny and entertaining.

Hmm....
I must say I find it strangely hypocritical how critical of Family guy this artist is for the creator's lack of originality in plot and constant use of pop-culture as a vehicle for "lowbrow" jokes, when this artist's gallery consists nearly entirely of artwork stylistically lifted from other artists'. Warner brothers, ie. Not very original, in my opinion.
And this "A Licky Boom Boom Down" details a scene that is ironically reminiscent of the type of scenario one would likely see in a Family Guy episode.

It doesn't make a difference if you love the show or not, but have the decency to not be guilty of the same things you rail against others for...

I have no problem with pop culture humor, so long as it's intelligent in its execution. Shows like "The Simpsons" turn their cultural references into clever satires and loving tributes, sometimes even fashioning entire plot lines around relevant cultural references, and it always ties into the characters' personalities. That's what makes them work, and that's what I seek to do in my art. "Family Guy" tends to reference stuff just for the sake of referencing it, and it leaves me just going "What?".

i know what you mean, at first it was really funny... but now in 2009, well... its not as funny as it used to be. i honestly don't know what happened... the humor just is rude instead of being its normal crude humor. i hope it gets funny again.

lmao, just another story about a show that got on a pedestal for almost no reason at all while other more note-worthy shows get canned.

Family Guy still has SOME qualities I like, I guess, but American Dad is just plain awful.

You sir, deserve a medal for making this. The whole script is so mashed together with unnessecerary references and the gags are so repeatitive and predictible that I seriously think you could just make a whole episode using a mad-lib.

"Hey Lois, remember that time I (past-tense verb) at (location) with ('60-'80s hasbeen almost nobody remembers and most of the target audience never heard of)? Nyeah nyeah nyeah nyeah..."

I was able to put up with the changes in seasons 4-6, but season 7 has been terrible so far. But it's been off the air for a little while, so it might get better. Seth MacFarlane is just working on too many shows and doing too much ideological humor.

family guy is starting to repeat itself, the jokes are always the same, just diffrent scenarios, its shows like aqua teen hunger force and superjail! that have no real sense of a plot that do well since they have no proper straight forward plot, and are both diffrent and hilarious

I used to enjoy this show but now, I lost all interest in it and started concentrating more on King Of The Hill, which is a far superior show by all means, too bad the 13th season is the last and yet we'll see more Family Guy *sighs*

I even enjoy American Dad more than Family Guy now.

HeartlessSlayer In reply to ??? [2009-02-04 15:31:07 +0000 UTC]

its true, you can really see the differences in the show from the past compared to now. But now,

-Meg is mocked almost all the time.
-Chris is a little smarter but a little aggressive
-Stewie is gayer
-Lois has that inner bitch of hers
-Peter is stupid as always, but probably more aggressive as in terms of arrogance and selfishness
-Brian is almost like a liberal nark. No longer as witty as before.

I admit that they still have some funny episodes, but even some jokes can be pulled off better. But at least the difference between them and the simpsons is that family guy still has a chance to improve themselves. But I just mostly watch the show for the jokes, kinda like sitting back, relax and not having to pay attention to what's happening. But still, here's hoping *crosses fingers*

I'll admit it. I liked the first three seasons. I suppose some episodes were mediocre in retrospect, but at least I could watch them at laugh at them more than once. But ever since Family guy made it's grand comeback, it's been devoid of anything even vaguely resembling humor or wit.

I'm glad someone else finally expressed my feelings on the issue.

The few first seasons of Family Guy are classics in my book. But when they came back after they got cancelled, it's like they were starting to abuse of their best tricks, rendering their plots and jokes tedious and repetitive.

I don't say it should be put down again, it just changed for something that doesn't appeal to me anymore. Apparently that's the case for a lot of people.

it was great for a shock value - something the Simpsons didn't realy have or push the envelope on - but after a while, eating the same candy over and over again...you just get tired of it.

Okay, weird analogy, but it works lol

jhaumann In reply to ??? [2009-02-02 18:29:00 +0000 UTC]

Your art piece is very truthful, in that Family Guy seemed to show alot of promise when it first began, but afterwards, especially after it was subsequently brought back after being canceled, has gone rapidly downhill. Even when the series was in its prime though, it still wasn't as good as The Simpsons. Now it's devolved into poop/sex jokes and 70's/80's pop culture references loosely threaded together. To me, Family Guy is just another creaky relic from the late-90's adult comedy cartoon explosion that needs to end.

Same thing goes for South Park, a series I think is way past its prime regardless of what alot of people think. With me, it's the kind of show that seemed awesome when I was a teenager but has now just extremely tedious. Its whole "scorched earth, nothing is sacred" satire of pop culture and current events was more relevant during its late-90's heyday but just seems dated now. But diehard fans of either show will tell you otherwise.

South Park and Family Guy just seemed to make more sense back then as a rebellion against what seemed like to some as rampant political correctness and pompous moral righteousness in the 90's. As someone who came of age then it felt good. But as edgy adult humor cartoons became the norm in the 2000s and after the tragedies of the Bush era occurred, shows like that stopped being funny to me. In my opinion, I think Family Guy and South Park need to stop and a fresh new generation of animated shows need to take its place.

FriskyWoods In reply to Fig404 [2009-02-06 17:35:06 +0000 UTC]

I think the problem is that some people mistook it for an intelligent and well-written show. You hear people defend the series as smart because it makes references to historical events and old Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, but those references mean nothing if they don't fit into the framework of the storyline. That's something which Futurama did incredibly well back in its heyday, but even that is started to lose its magic with the last two films. They're even going to HAVE Seth MacFarlane in The Wild Green Yonder, which was incredibly disappointing news.

The Family Guy chars look very good in your style, so you've done a great job on that stance. And it's amazing that it has been 10 years since it first aired.

I have to admit that I actually do get a good laugh from Family Guy, but I do agree with what this pic says. Now the chars have become practically one-joke characters. No depth at all.

After seeing Meg getting treated like crap in almost every episode, it becomes really tiring and almost on the breach of pitying her. The whole Herbert thing eyeing Chris and all of the young boys is too creepy to be funny. Lois has pretty much back-tracked into becoming a Marge Simpson-clone (while at the same time, The Simpsons have made Marge a more rounded character and have had her grow more of a backbone). Stewie I feel has been wavering between a use to make gay jokes to reverting back to his psychotic ways, while Peter has been through one non-sensical plot line and idiotic scheme to another.

I can see why you made Brian the one who has a gripe. I feel that aside for one off-kilter storyline (the one where he meets his long-lost son) I find that Brian is the one character in the whole series who has actual depth and is the more rounded of characters. But then again, that's just my opinion.

jbwarner86 In reply to WindyCityPuma [2009-02-02 14:21:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I get the sense that if we could look behind the scenes and see the Griffins when they're not "on camera", Brian would have some unpleasant words to describe his line of work. I always enjoy depicting cartoon characters as actors, and Brian seems like the type who wouldn't be too happy with his current role.
