As of January 31, 2009, it's been ten years since "Family Guy" made its debut on FOX. And oh boy, what a difference a decade makes.I won't try to pretend that I'm still entertained by this show, because I'm not. I won't even try to paint a picture of the first three seasons as the perfect example of what the show could be, because that's not true either (even the so-called "glory years" tended to be mediocre at best). But at least in the spirit of Seth MacFarlane's trademark cutaways to things that are only tangentially related to what's going on, I can remember the time, way back in 1999, when these characters showed promise.
What'll the next ten years bring? I'm not sure I want to think about that...

i never did like family guy, though i do have a tee-shirt with stewie on it. i always get wierd looks when i say that.
and the simpsons hasnt gone downhill, its still great.

I feel exactly the same way. The first few years were really promising but after they started getting a lot of funding, they conveniently ran out of ideas.
The series now is just...offensive. To the ethnicities it uses racial humor against, to the viewers' intelligence, to comedy in general. -_-;; Mnaghh.

I haven't watched the new episodes of Family Guy, so I wouldn't know, but yeah, those "Remember when..." 's sometime feel a little too repetitive >_>

You captured my views exactly. I stopped watching a few months ago because I realized that for the past few years the episodes weren't satisfying in the least. Then they stopped being funny, for all of the prescribed reasons. What a shame.

I'm with you. I can only think of two episodes worth watching. FOX ought to cut this and bring back Futurama. Futurama was, at its worst, a million times better than Family Guy at its best.

If Fox Brought Back Futurama, then it'll kill it again with more NFL Doubleheaders and 3 PM Football games. It was the NFL that killed the show.

So true... it used to be hilarious, but now, the chracters don't have the goals they did before or the same emotions about things...like Stewie isn't very evil anymore, and Meg is just ignored, and the chicken thing is starting to get annoying...
Also, I think they should just stick to one Jesus, ever notice how in some episodes he's considered a fake, while in others he's all magical and stuff?

While I still like Family Guy over any new episodes of The Simpsons over the last 10 years (let alone all the garbage reality television), you pretty much hit the nail on the head about the problems with the show since it's return.
Pretty much the only stable animated comedy shows are South Park and King of the Hill, and even those shows are becoming hit and miss now.

Either way, people will waste their lives on "mediocre" televised bullshit. Whether the show is any good or not is up to the viewer. While I can respect the masses for their grouped opinions on how shitty, or not so shitty the show was and still is today. I happen to love Family Guy just as it is, it's grown over the last decade and with it.. many of its loyal viewers.
To say that it's fallen into a heap of shit over the last decade, one would have had to watch the show that long up until now with its recent episodes. To the haters of Family Guy, you cannot deny this logic. Whether it be snippits of 30 second long intervals on YouTube, or the whole half an hour episode on tv.. You're still watching it. Kudos to the stalwart fans that have watched it thus far. Kudos to those who are standing up and sharing how you feel about something, whether it be good or bad.
The art of said Family Guy caption is absolutely wonderful, and I give you props for being such a talented artist. But the show is what it is, and opinions really won't change that. It fought for its spot on FOX network, and it's apparently there to stay. Instead of wasting your time watching it to see what you can next hate, watch Jeopardy.. or the Discovery Channel. Glean some actual knowledge from television.. or better yet, turn the tv off and be done with it altogether. Oh.. and.. don't take my comment to heart, it's only the internet.

Awwww... Poor Seth McFarlane. Our school holds him up as one of the most successful and famous RISD alums... but to see good ideas go stale.. it makes us all a little scared of what our own ideas will become with the test of time and the judgments of expectant viewers.

When I get a chance to watch it, there are still moments that do make me laugh out loud, and although I agree with this assessment of the story lines, sometimes I am still just astounded at the stuff they are able to do and say. I agree, it has the potential to do more. I think it could reach much further into our collective hypocrisy and terribly insular views of our society and the world.

i have mixed feelings about the show:
my bitch is what I've come to to call the 30-second joke (Good example- the Chicken fights; bad ex-the ipicac scene ) and I totally agree with you on Stewie and Meg. I still find the show funny though,but I've never thought the show was the funniest thing on TV.

I guess it is too old now. The creators probably used all their ideas. Sometimes it`s better to stop when a show has reached his limits.
I think the 1st season was okay. 2-5 were hilarious, but now it`s getting sad. They hadn`t a good episodes in a long while. But I still watch it, hoping it will getting good again.
