Description As of January 31, 2009, it's been ten years since "Family Guy" made its debut on FOX. And oh boy, what a difference a decade makes.

I won't try to pretend that I'm still entertained by this show, because I'm not. I won't even try to paint a picture of the first three seasons as the perfect example of what the show could be, because that's not true either (even the so-called "glory years" tended to be mediocre at best). But at least in the spirit of Seth MacFarlane's trademark cutaways to things that are only tangentially related to what's going on, I can remember the time, way back in 1999, when these characters showed promise.

What'll the next ten years bring? I'm not sure I want to think about that...

Honestly, I like American Dad, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, etcetera pretty much the same. But Family guy does sometimes lack its humor that it used to have.

Ah, I totally agree with you there. I don't watch Family Guy much anymore, save for a few re-runs. I've always been more of a Simpsons fan~

Perfect. I stopped watching Family Guy ages ago, the humor always falls short, and it always follows the same patter, every episode.

To be honest I jumped on the Family Guy band wagon a bit late-I was a freshman in college-about 3 years ago-by then Season 5 had just came out. I'll admit that I do find Family Guy to be funny-but the latest episodes have been rather weak-although the "I dream of Jesus" episode was a riot in my opinion.

Your picture is truthful and hillarious-although I don't remember a single time in which Meg was treated like a human being. I love the Peter quote!

I love family guy, but i do agree that it has gone down a bit..
But its inevitable. Ratings and shows will go up and down like a rollercoaster.
its better than south park and the simpsons though.. Yet, some new simpsons stuff is pretty funny.
I half agree with your statement, but i also agree with the people who said if you don't like it, why make art of it?

Just one question...

You've obviously stated your dislike for what the show is now, so why do you draw art for it?

It's a tv show, an animated tv show. Of course it's going to change, the creators and writers only care about ratings, and if they do something the majority likes, they'll keep it until the audience tires of it.

If you don't like where the show's going, don't watch it, don't think about it, and don't waste your time to complain about it in length. I enjoy the ocassional hate-art (I even find most of it funny) but this is a little on the ridiculous side.

jbwarner86 In reply to Jetsir [2009-02-01 04:33:46 +0000 UTC]

Though I don't particularly care for the stories or the characterization on the show, the characters themselves still fascinate me. I'm inspired by what they could be, and that's what motivates me to do artwork for them.

This isn't meant to be hate art, it's just a tongue-in-cheek poke at the show's evolution, and a fourth-wall-breaking look at what the characters themselves might say if they were faced with what the audience has seen.

As much as I do like Family Guy, I really do have to agree that the series has gone downhill. When I watch an episode from seasons 1-3, I'm entertained and I laugh. Newer episodes... not so much. Plus, the jokes from the older seasons don't rely on the whole 'Remember the time when...' gag.

Honestly, I think Seth McFarlane puts a lot more effort in an episode of American Dad than he does in a season of Family Guy.

Anyway, nicely drawn, makes a nice statement, and I wholeheartedly agree with Brian; his expression says it all.

Emmacabre [2009-02-01 00:21:58 +0000 UTC]

My feelings exactly. The show has never really interested me and it is an almost-exact rip-off of The Simpsons (whose current seasons are better than Family Guy ever has been). It has had its funny moments, but sometimes a joke can be so esoteric/crude/whatever that it kind of distances the viewer.

(However, Brian was always my favorite. )

jbwarner86 In reply to Emmacabre [2009-02-01 00:25:42 +0000 UTC]

I don't see it as a rip off of "The Simpsons", though the inspiration is clear. In its early years, it seemed to be drawing heavily from the Simpsonian style of writing, though without the level of cleverness required to pull it off. Now, though, it primarily goes the route of "What shocking and out-of-the-blue stuff can we make the characters do this week?"

ToonEGuy In reply to jbwarner86 [2009-02-01 03:57:50 +0000 UTC]

I thought of it as a Simpsons-ripoff at first too, and it probably isn't, but what I really don't like is the fact that it seems to be "replacing" The Simpsons in today's world. I know it's because people think the new Simpsons episodes aren't that funny anymore while Family Guy is always throwing random junk at people's faces but I've noticed that some of the really hardcore fans act like The Simpsons never were funny. That really bothers me when a show done as badly as this makes people forget how much better it's predecessor was. Oh well, I guess I'm just stuck in the 90's.

pap64 In reply to ??? [2009-02-01 00:10:28 +0000 UTC]

To be honest, I still enjoy the first three seasons better than any of the newer ones. Yes, they still had jokes that didn't make sense but they were far more focused on stories than on jokes. "Road to Rhode Island", the episode in which Brian falls in love with the Jingle singer, the episode in which Peter makes a deal with the mafia, Stewie's birthday episode, all of these had really solid stories with character driven action and some funny jokes.

Now all the characters are mainly vehicles to deliver jokes, and not good ones at that.

To me, its like after they got renewed Seth and his crew got full of it. They thought that since people liked the first seasons they could make all of the jokes bigger, longer and more hardcore at the expense of story and character. "I'm sure half the people that watches this series don't give a crap about story" they say.

And yes, the Simpsons might not be as good as they used to be but they still deliver solid stories and good humor.

There was once a time for me when there was no such thing as a bad Family Guy episode.

Sounds like I'm over-romanticizing the past, but the fact remains that the better part of today's output is as funny as an ingrown toenail.

I think the writers are resting on their laurels, because now Seth MacFarlane is being paid a ton of money to make MORE lame programs, rather than making the best of his current two shows, and they now think they don't need us fans to make them happy anymore.

How soon do they forget that it is us fans that kept the show's spirit alive when FOX kept trying to cancel it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jbwarner86 In reply to Yeldarb86 [2009-01-31 23:40:35 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately, it seems that most fans are okay with the lower quality of humor, since the show's still proven to be profitable. But we'll just see if the ratings keep up after FOX premieres "Ocean's Three-and-a-Half", the first new episode in three months. Between the scant premieres and the dinky 12-episode DVD sets, something tells me that the "Family Guy" loyalists won't stand for this sort of thing much longer. I know I wouldn't.

Shows really can't last for very long before they just seem to dissolve.

I've kind of thought the same when I see some of the Simpsons episodes from Season 11 and onward. It seems that they really kind of started to really rely more on sex jokes and whatnot.

I miss some of the earlier Simpsons episodes like 'Lisa's Substitute,' the ones that didn't try to be overly crazy, but had nice character moments.

I did have the first seasons of Family Guy, but I rarely ever watch them anymore. But I do agree the throwaway characterization of Meg is pretty old, and that Stewie's original plans for world domination seem to have just disappeared.

It was once an 'okay show, in my own opinion, but it has gone down hill on roller skates since then. I found it rediculous to not be able to go a day at school without hearing someone quote it. "What the duece? He-heh-heh-heh, who's leg do I have to hump to get a martini around here?"

I wish Adult Swim would send Family Guy to Comedy Central, and get Futurama back. They did'nt have repetitive episodes about fighting a fucking chicken who gave him a bad coupon. Kiss my shiney, metal ass.

Very nice picture.
