As of January 31, 2009, it's been ten years since "Family Guy" made its debut on FOX. And oh boy, what a difference a decade makes.I won't try to pretend that I'm still entertained by this show, because I'm not. I won't even try to paint a picture of the first three seasons as the perfect example of what the show could be, because that's not true either (even the so-called "glory years" tended to be mediocre at best). But at least in the spirit of Seth MacFarlane's trademark cutaways to things that are only tangentially related to what's going on, I can remember the time, way back in 1999, when these characters showed promise.
What'll the next ten years bring? I'm not sure I want to think about that...

Yeah, the show has gone downhill. I don't laugh at it much anymore. Those cutaways are just..boring and unnessasary now.

i dont know what the hell you guys were talking about, family guy gets funnier every season, the 1st season was shit, the animation was poor, the voices were bad, its grown today to be as funny as hell.

Sicne the new episodes i also noticed that meg isn't really part of the family anymore she's liek.. donnu.and stewie used to be funnier also~ just like brien. it was funnier before seriously.

I have to say that it was Blue Harvest that killed the series for me (for a start, it will now render future Star Wars references in comedy completely pointless). The only reason I prefer The Simpsons is that it took longer for it to get stale (personally, after Season 11). Seems like Futurama got it right by having four DVD feature length films after its long hiatus.

Agreed. Haven't watched Family Guy myself for quite some time, if not cos of what other people have been saying about it, I still find it more or less "meh" these days.
And of course, at university, you'd hear some criticism about the show, too. One example that it doesn't make good use of the animation, that you could just consider it a radio show with picutres.

I like the earlier seasons, but still, there are other shows I tend to watch before even my favorite episodes of Family Guy:
(In no particular order): Animaniacs, Freakazoid, Avatar, Transformers, Mythbusters, Ruby Gloom, Woody Woodpecker, Tazmania, Unwrapped, Diners Drive-ins and Dives, the Secret Life Of... (the last three are from food network), Man vs Food.
And of course, as a life-long fan, Looney Toons!
Especially Speedy Gonzales; thank heavens for DVD sets.

I love this show and will always love this show because of what it stands for and what it does for me. It was cancelled because people were offended by the content and instead of CHANGING THE F*#KING CHANNEL and being done with it they had to make it their life goal to get it kicked off of the air. Worthless human beings that have so little going on in their own lives that they have to try and make things miserable for everyone else just so they can get off at night. When this show was brought back it stood up against those that brought it down. This happens so rarely that when it does, it's worth applauding, in my opinion.
And what it does for me; my life sucks well enough. Who's doesn't? This show can give me 22 minutes of freedom from that by making me laugh at things that are completely stupid and meaningless. And my pride doesn't suffer at all admitting it to myself and others that laughing at things that shouldn't be laughed at is ok.
You may not like the show and that's fine. It's your opinion just as this is mine. But think of it this way. You take your pictures and you draw your art and for what? To please the few people that stop by your page everytime you post something new. What if of the 100 people that check out your stuff there's a small group of 5 that doesn't like what you've done and instead of not watching your page they go to the DA heads and bitch and moan and cry and complain until what you've done, what gives you joy and the reason to call yourself an artist even if it's just you that calls yourself that, is kicked off of here. Would it piss you off? You'd be a damned liar if you said it wouldn't.
We only live once, folks. The more time we take to complain about those things we do not like, the less time we have to enjoy the things we do.

After they did the gag where Peter fights the chicken for a 3rd or 4th time, I couldn't watch the show anymore. They clearly have no ideas left and need to waste 5-10mins with meaningless crap.

Amen! I have the first 2 seasons and that is it. I went back and started watching it recently on FOX...and was just bored to tears. A friend of mine calls recent Family Guy seasons as "comedy abortions". I'm inclined to agree with him.

Anyone who says that Family Guy was never about the characters needs to watch "Road to Rhode Island" and the best of the pre-cancellation episodes.
Family Guy CAN have both cutaways and character humor. It's just that the writers have become so complacent that the show totally eschews characters for cutaways, causing the show to no longer be consistently funny. Most of the newer episodes are the comedy equivalent of a marshmallow Peep.

You know something? You're right! I never realised just how lame Family Guy has become! I get really tired of the overused gags (like that old guy and the greased-up deaf guy) and half the episode is just Peter, Stewie, or Brian singing about NOTHING. It's just not the same anymore... *le sigh*

Early seasons were good, but those after weren't really funny. It started to lack originality in storyline and more reliant on references.

Agreed. They started to treat Meg like crap, Chris and Peter are more retarded, Lois was more of a harlot, Stewie wasn't that much of a bad guy anymore and that's sad and now Brain's an atheist. ><

I feel kinda offended since I'm fatter and uglier than she is, even though we kinda look alike, 'cept my hair's longer x_X And Stewy barely tries to kill anyone, now he's just a homo...and not the good kind.
