jchanders β€” A ditch or a canal?

Description A picture which I submitted two days ago was called by me "a ditch in spring": [link]

Several of you protested that this was not a "ditch" from their point of view, but either a river or a canal, being far too large/broad for a ditch.

As to the river, there is a quick answer. A river is a natural and streaming bit of watercourse. We have rivers here, too, but the watercourse on my shot was not one of them. Neither is the one you see on this picture.

In this case I would also speak of a ditch, a broad one in this case. I wonder what my fellow-photographers from the Netherlands and Belgium think about this, as they live in the same sort of landscape?

But to tell the truth: the watercourse on this picture is a canal. Or rather it is the relic of an attempt to build a canal.

It is thus a canal that never was! But it still is called a canal. The "Tienhovens Kanaal" (the Canal of Tienhoven) was intended to connect the River Vecht with Hilversum and the area north of it.

In order to get as far as that it was necessary to cross a sand ridge of several miles, created during the last ice age but one as an end moraine and at this place still up to 10 metres higher than the surrounding flatlands.

Whether it was lack of money or the impossibility to keep up the water level in that sandy stretch, the canal was given up after about 200 yards in that sandy area (there are now the woods in the background).

So this unused bit of a canal that was never finished now remains a most peaceful relic of a late-18th or early-19th-century endeavour that proved a failure, but certainly is a success in todayΒ΄s landscape.

There was an older version of this picture put into scraps, but the discussion about the "ditch-or-canal" question has made me rejuvenate it.

I like your heading! lol! Great shot! Yeah, and it's a lovely photo, ditch or canal! Yeah, we'd probably say that is a Canal here too! Hey, if there wasn't different words and different meanings for things in this world, it'd be a plain and boring old place, wouldn't it!? lol! Thanks for your explaination!

Yes, nothing like variety! It makes life such a worthwhile experience! I am so glad I once met and married a "foreign" girl and now live in the Netherlands while I am a German. It opened my eyes for so many things ... and probably more so for the beauty of this country than the "natives" who take too much for granted.

First off, why did you scrap this at first? It is a very good landscape, or should say waterscape? photograph.

As to the matter of ditch or canal, I really don't care at all.
A big ditch, or a small canal. Who is there to worry, as this is just a wonderfull shot.

I am afraid I put my answer into the wrong place. So here it is again:

That is the easy way out, I am afraid, at least for our friends in Australia or Britain ...
Why I had put it into scraps? There are/were quite a few nice shots which I submitted in the first year of my gallery - when I was an "unknown" photographer with less than 1000 pageviews - that I have put into scraps because of a very low number of views, with the clear intention to bring them up again some time now. So no problem: I have liked this shot all the time. And I am very glad that you do too!

Hahaha, yes but why should we do it the hard way, if the easy way out is so much more enjoyable. Just enjoy the shots you take, and leave the whole 'ditch/canal/river discussion, subject to own interpertation. Thats what I would say.. But I'm very easy with those kind of things.

I see you've thought about scrapping it and recovering it. Very good of you.

A sort of rebirth! A pity I cannot do it with the lightthoughts. The first ones of them had far too few views, I find now.
