Description Black-tailed godwits, in Dutch "gruttos", in German "Uferschnepfen", are typical Dutch polderland birds. It is not easy to get a good shot of them though. So I was very happy that this one waited long enough on its pole for me to get this shot. Taken near Eemnes/The Netherlands.

Wonderful looking birds! I've seen them in a meadow, didn't have a camera with me. But I think I would need another lens to get a shot like this!!!!

Yes, you have the better camera now, but indeed you need a good zoom for a shot like this. Fortunately mine has that zoom at least.

What lens do you have?

Een vaste zoomlens met een "range" van 35-400 mm. Inderdaad biedt dat super mogelijkheden.

This is so very close to this [link] called a "Common Snipe" which is very 'common' here in British Columbia. We have many species of long beaked birds some of which are sandpipers, dowagers, dunlins .... etc. etc.

You were indeed lucky to get this capture, very well done indeed.

Many thanks for posting that picture. Indeed a similar type of bird. I just keep learning!
And many thanks for the praise.

what a long beak he has ! nice DoF here, too. did you crop any ont he sides at all? feels to me like there is somethig missing to the classic format - but maybe I'm just used to my 1:1.5 to much

jchanders In reply to Araantonak [2006-07-02 07:15:28 +0000 UTC]

As you know I play with formats. This time it is a real "Herausvergrâßerung"; I cropped it on all sides to some extent.

What a strange bill that bird has! In Canada I don't think there are many birds with that kind of bill.

jchanders In reply to almostnewyar [2006-06-26 21:50:09 +0000 UTC]

This is a typical wet-grassland bird. They use the bill for finding worms. No idea whether you have wetlands in Canada where you find them too.

We have plenty of wetlands in Canada, but usually, at least in my area, they are full of mallards and Redwinged Black birds.
