Description A herd of sheep on the dike along the river Eem. It seems a very natural landscape picture for the Netherlands, but shepherds, once very common, can no longer be seen very often.

As you will have seen that picture is already several years old. Never have I seen such a shepherd since then either. So I was indeed very lucky at the time.

Many thanks.

You mention something I already wondered about: suddenly all the favs are no longer counted. I do not quite understand yet why ... Do you know?

A real pity, as I am losing lots of favs. You see I am a bit of a fav freak, as you can also guess from my journals.

very nice capture ! the best one would normally get of sheep here is their back, I've been around sheep alot in the north of scotland but they are always very shy and run away once you get close to them. I'm not 100% sure what a dike is, but it's form makes the sheep align in an arch which gives this picture a great look

Normally sheep here would not amass in this way, but this herd was led along the dike by that shepherd, and just pressed forward. So you got this very special compact front of sheep.
A dike is a kind of wall along a coast or a river, keeping the sea or the river from sweeping over the low-lying land. In an inland-polder the dikes here are rather low, but along the big rivers like the Rhine-esturary rivers as the Waal and the Lek or the Maas, they are very high and even hightened more now as people fear more rain and therefore more riverwater with the climate change.

This is really nice. Captures the essence of sheepherding quite nicely (not that I have ever done it myself)!

As the dike was not very broad it was possible to get the herd in such a compact way. That indeed gives a very nice impression. Great you like it.

Did you hear the funny story that happened in Turkey last week? A sheep goes of from a cliff and then the whole herd follows, 450 sheep lost!!!! Lemmings or sheep with suicidal tendencies? who know? But us humans are also like that.....

No, that story did not reach us here. Fortunately there are no cliffs in Holland. But you might drown in a river. Or as a sheep just roll over on your back. I found a sheep like this the other day during one of my cycling trips, and so I could fortunately turn it back on its feet (otherwise they die, as they just cannot turn round again themselves). That was at least one sheep saved ...

I am glad you like this shot that much. Yes, it was an enormous piece of luck to meet the shepherd that afternoon. It gave the opportunity for many shots. This is the one that I like best.
