Description The Lousiana crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is said to be a common crayfish species in the southern parts of the USA, but he certainly it is a stranger - and a pretty dangerous one - here in the Netherlands. Having never seen it before, I found it a very strange encounter to see one on the grass of the Gooilust park in ยดs-Graveland this afternoon.
For more information about it see a.o. the Wikipedia article: [link]

It certainly was out of its elements! - Many thanks for commenting again. You must have been overwhelmed by the number of my pictures submitted in the meantime.

Asura-Valkyrie [2006-10-09 20:08:26 +0000 UTC]

Whoa! Watch out! Very strange that it would be so far out there. Non-native species, I'm guessing. Hopefully, it's not invasive over there.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

jchanders In reply to Asura-Valkyrie [2006-10-12 21:19:16 +0000 UTC]

It is very invasive and eating up all local crayfish! And poisining the others with a certain sort of virus. And digging holes in dykes, so Holland will drown!

Asura-Valkyrie In reply to jchanders [2006-10-12 22:00:36 +0000 UTC]

hah, dang. Sounds like alot of trouble. we have organisms that do that sort of thing over here. I think we have a little foreign blue crab that does that same sort of thing too.

Yes, I should have killed it and taken it home for a good meal, even if a small one!

It was pretty slow, probably because of the cold. I would not have dared to get so near if it had been more mobile.

Fishermen don't like these much here, they tickle the lines and they think they have a bite when they don't .

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

jchanders In reply to AlicesPlace [2006-10-12 21:29:03 +0000 UTC]

They do not love them here either. And these things eat all local crayfish or poison them with a virus. Worse, they dig holes in dykes. So Holland will drown!

is it marine or freshwater? we have couple of american freshwater crabs invading our waters and pushing out native species

I wonder if he saw the reflection in your lens and decided to attack?

jchanders In reply to DuvallGear [2006-10-12 21:33:03 +0000 UTC]

It was just a defensive gesture! Probably thought me too big! Eats all local crayfish instead!
