Description
This is a alley of very special old beech trees. Their form may due to a low cut long ago, but it still makes me wonder why they did not develop their normal high trunks.Taken near Hilversum/The Netherlands.

It is due to "pollarding" where the young growth was continually cut for domestic use. At a young age the leading shoot was stopped so the tree would produce many branches at a low height. Lovely picture

Yes, I think these were indeed pollarded. It does not happen very often with beech trees though ... ?
