Description Roes are not very common in the heathland around Hilversum, as the area is much too crowded, the pieces of heath are comparatively small and too many people are walking their dogs there. But this lot (actually they were five of them, two were lying down) seems to survive here well under these circumstances. I was glad that they allowed me to get close enough for this shot, not a perfect one from the point of view of a real wild animal photographer, but I admit not to be discontent ...

Thanks a lot for your very imaginative reaction.

One more thing: please also take a look at my other two galleries here on dA, if you do not know them already:

I shall keep trying. The birds are the most difficult part!

Even a reasonably good photographer needs his bit of good luck, I would say.

You were very lucky indeed to come across such a secretive animal in a family group, in broad daylight and out in the open!! There is a big population round us here but they stay close to woodland cover. The other notable difference is that these are much lighter in colour to ours which at this time of year in their winter coats appear almost black.

The interesting thing is that they seem to have got a little less secretive here on the heathland around Hilversum. Can roe get used to people?

I suppose they can but they are certainly very cautious here and, as poaching is quite common, it is with good reason!

I do not think they poach here. That may be an extra explanation of the roes being so relatively tame.
