Are the poles, birdsnests? They add tremendously to the shot. Lovely work here.

They are willow trees, cut back each year. Part of the Dutch cultural heritage from the time when people made baskets etc. from the young twigs. Old trees of the sort can have magnificent forms. You find some far back in my gallery.

Willow trees like we have in the states willow trees? That's just amazing and what an interesting tradition. I'll have to read about it.

Yes, I think they are the same willow trees. Just to give you an idea how they look when they are old, here one of my former shots: [link]

What are those dead tree things.

jchanders In reply to volcanohead [2006-03-24 17:09:05 +0000 UTC]

They are not dead at all. They are willow trees that are pruned each year. A curious Dutch habit which can result in wonderful tree forms, in the long run.

Oh...beautiful! It's a very clear picture. I love the sky in this one, the clouds.. and the contrast between the blue water and the green colour of the grass!!

Oh it looks cold there. The trees look almost as if they have been "pruned" or is this a natural process? Great composition. Very well done

jchanders In reply to Riverbreeze [2006-03-11 09:10:38 +0000 UTC]

It is colder today. Somehow the last bits of winter air here do not want to go. Well, just a week more or so. Then it will be really spring. The birds do not care any longer: they have started their spring morning singing already!
As to those willow trees they are pruned each year. A curious Dutch habit which can result in wonderful tree forms. Please compare: [link] and [link]
