Thank you. It seems indeed a fantasy land now when summer has changed the scene so completely.

You know what your photos remind me of? The painter Thomas Kinkade's work: [link]
How do you take these types of photos..i mean how do you pick up the light beams AND such amazing detail? Everytime I try this, it either comes out too bright or not bright enough..lol.

jchanders In reply to Photo5newdude [2007-05-21 16:24:46 +0000 UTC]

That is a nice comparison. Though far too flattering for me, I would say.

Taking those sunbeam shots takes some practice. First you have to find them in the right weather and light conditions, of course, and that can be quite difficult, as there are only very few days in the year that you get them, at least here. And then you have to choose the right exposure. Just takes a couple of pics, using normal exposure and then underexposing the shot still a bit more. Wit my cam I have to underexpose just a little bit to get the right effect. If I underexpose too much, the mistyness kind of disappears.

Sorry to react so late. Your message got completely snowed under by a great number of later messages.

lol, another thing I've noticed as a photographer/artist, one typically is almost always more critical of one's own work than others are of one's work (if that makes sense) which is good b/c it keeps the artist humble, and also shows the artist is always looking for ways to improve and hone their skills.

What really gets me, is that this shot was taken with an aperture of f/2.8 at 1/80 and so much detail was recorded in both the foreground and background. I would've never guessed the f/stop to be 2.8, probably would've guessed about an f/9 or so (which could also be partially attributed to the resolution on my computer screen).

So essentially, to capture a scene such as this, there isn't a general rule of thumb to a correct exposure aside from bracketing and finding the correct weather conditions?

I must say, next time I get to make an attempt at catching sun beams, I can only hope they turn out as beautiful as the one's you've managed to capture!!

Yes, keeping humble is quite a good thing. The rest is just trying and trying again.

As to the field of depth, I think the Panasonic FZ10 with its very compact 12-times zoom Leica lense has a much broader depth than other lenses. It is still only a feeling, as I am not technical enough to understand those formulas which you find for example in Wikipedia, but I realize now with the Nikon D80 and its 18-200 lense that the field of depth is much less. Also the Panasonic had an aperture of f/2.8 all over the field, ie. up to 420 mm.

I really enjoy this!
You might like it as well as you add more contrast to it, then the sun beams will come out more I think. Anyways great job!

Simply beautiful. The sum beams show up nicely against the background, and just the place itself is perfect.

With your permission, may I use this pic as a background for one of my own pics? Credit to you, of course, and I can link you to it once it's completed if you wish ^^

Aaaah I thought this kind of places where only in books and movies.

The kind of place I picture while reading "The Chronicles of Prydain" and "Narnia"... but it is there, fog and mysticism included.

WOW! YAY!

This would make a beautiful painting... or a background for a good cartoon (those that you don't see anymore)....
