Description
Yes, they really called the big fossilized shell the "Devil's toenails". The scientific term is "gryphaea". They are extinct oysters. What will they have tasted? Certainly it was not easy to crack them. So dino, however, would not have much problems, I suppose. Compare: [link]Found on the beach at the "Black Cows' Cliff" ("Falaise des vaches noires") next to Houlgate/Normandy.

Fascinating things, Gryphaea. We're lucky to have a few beaches that are literally strewn with them, I've found quite a few pristine and large examples over the years.

Yes, it was quite an experience to find this old fossilized shell, so much bigger than the new ones around.
