Hard to say. One of the hallmarks of a deadly zoonotic (or exotic) virus infection is that once it crosses the species barrier (infects a new host species) it is more fatal to its new host than a common one that has acclimated with the host since ancient times. Conspiracy theories also abound regarding Covid virus origins (i.e., genetic engineering, weapons lab, etc.), such conspiracies are no stranger to past & similar outbreaks. I favor Occam's razor in that regard. The answer may be the least complicated explaination. The virus always existed, undiscovered, and crossed the species barrier. Hopefully when everything shakes out we can vaccinate or bring it down somehow a managable level.
