Time for a head canon/alternative universe/different take/whatever!From a more clissic-ified perspective, Prof. Gerald Robotnik is a retired scientist. He was a renowned bio scientist in his time. He's even managed to construct a lizard/dinosaur hybrid! As a descendant of his, Ivo Robotnik looked up to him as a child, and inspired him to later become a scientist himself.
However, Ivo was never noticed by his own grandfather. For his cousin, Maria Robotnik always took up most of Gerald's attention. She means everything to Gerald. Ivo tries to show his inverntions to him, but Gerald takes no notice. Ivo is very jealous of their bond. He hates Maria's guts! She's not even a scientist. And do I even need to mention the lack of the Robotnik family mustache?
As for Maria herself, she's a perfectly healthy regular young woman who takes time to help take care of her elderly grandfather. She is one of the reasons why the evil Robotnik was driven to, well, evil!

I have another theory, this one involves why Eggman hates hedgehogs in general. Eggman could have been jealous of Shadow and Maria's friendship. I mean, Shadow was literally created to help try to save Maria, but would Gerald do anything for Eggy? No.

I actually really liked Dr. Gerald Robotnik's character in Sonic X and the games. Pity we only knew him for a few minutes. There was so much potential.

I get what they were going for with Geralds story. But if you look at the entire story as a whole, there are a lot of plot holes that don't make sense.
Again, I think this would've also been a great opportunity to expand on Ivo's character! It does revolve around his family.
But hey, at least it made the name 'Robotnik' canon!~

Kind of a shame we didn't get to know more about what Ivo thought of his cousin in the games. So it's interesting to see this.

Ikr? Eggman should've been much more involved in the story of SA2. I mean, it focuses on his family name. The least they could do is make him seem just as important and relevant, even maybe exploring his back story as well. Rather than just calling Gerald his grandfather.
I don't care about how characters like Sonic, Rouge, Big, etc. came to be. But if there's one Sonic character I'd like to see an origin story for,(an OFFICIAL one by Sega) it's Dr. Robotnik.

Explain why Eggman has more levels than Shadow or Rouge in the Dark side story 'den.

Because he was one of the original playable characters alongside Sonic and Knuckles. Tails, Rouge and Shadow were an after thought.

That, or it's because of the 10th anniversary since Sonic the Hedgehog, where the titular hedgehog and his arch-nemesis debutted in.
