A tribute to film

NOTE: The timeline is NOT accurate by any means. It is NOT meant to be a useful guide of any kind; it's just a design. I am not a photography historian. I just arranged the cameras by what I thought would've been a logical progression. Below are the actual dates for all the cameras beginning from the left:

  • Empire State View folding field camera. c1895.

  • Ensign Cadet. 1927 -1931.

  • Six-16 Brownie Junior. 1934 - 1942.

  • Duaflex II. 1950 - 1954.

  • Jiffy Kodak Six-16. 1933 - 1937.

  • Kodak Jr. Six-16 Series II. 1937 - 1940.

  • Agfa Ansco Super Regent. 1954 - 1960.

  • Argus C2. 1938 - 1966.

  • Pony IV. 1957 - 1961.

  • Star-Lite. c1962.

  • Sears KSX Super. c1981.

Materials and Methods
Stock photos for all the cameras and source of all the information about the camera's above is from Sheila Lovett (nfocus @ sxc.hu: [link] ). Awesome stock photographer, check her out! I used only the photos available to me which did not happen to include many photos of "landmark" cameras so sorry for that.

Made using GIMP.

Additional Comments
Update: Again, this is not meant to be a useful guide of any kind. If you are able to make a more accurate and useful camera timeline, I implore you to do it.

Update II: The stock photographer of the cameras Sheila Lovette saw this deviation and thought it was a cool idea so she is making an ACCURATE version. The ACCURATE version will be on her website: www.retiredcameras.com

I have just recently obtained a Six-16 Brownie Junior in almost immaculate condition.  Someone simply discarded it with some junk on the street.

It is a nice idea. And it is kinda funny how the seemingly evolution might not be like that really.

Great job: research and design - design (and in this case, graphic design) it's not only aesthetics, but also - among others - visual communication. And all communication must be exact.

Very nice
I know it is a tribute to film, but to see a more modern camera at the end would be nice perhaps.

That's neat.
My mom has almost one of every camera up there. xD Not the same ones, of course, but ones that look similar...except for a few..and my grandfather probably has those.

Intresting picture.

I use GIMP for all my pics unless it's cell shaded, then I only use flash ^-^. The resizing you are looking for does not exsits. Not even the most hi-tech software can do it. I'm sorry to tell you that.

i-am-jacques-strappe [2009-12-26 22:27:57 +0000 UTC]

Interesting idea, but to make this truly useful (and to utilize the timeline correctly, because why else have it there?), I'd try putting the cameras in order of when they were first manufactured, not for aesthetic reasons. I also agree with the commenter above, using "landmark" cameras, such as the original Kodak Brownie or the first Leica, would also make a greater impact.

As a sidenote, I see what you're doing, wanting the cameras to face the same way, but mirroring them (such as the Argus and the hit camera) really makes it appear bizarre to people who are accustomed to what these cameras look like.

I would but its your idea ( great one by the way ) and I am a lazy person So...I suppose the brownie will never be in a timeline like this...meh...what'cha going to do?
