Description Acrylic on hardboard (12 x 16)

Another exercise to get me started. Acting on a thought I once had. If you feel burnt out, one way of pushing through that might be to express that burned out feeling. Turn your void into your source of expression, no matter what lack luster image it may produce. Unfortunately, that is harder to do than to say, especially right when that feeling first sets in. But now, after having rested up, the void persist, but my desire to create is returning. So with that thought in mind, I put theory into practice.

Jeff I have a lot of empathy for those feelings and sometimes you just have to paint your way out of the lull! This is excellent because it captures the way you feel. Yes there are empty spaces, but there's also a thread of hope along the road too. There's a path and it never ends, winding forever to the distant light

I think that this expresses burnt, and a kind of void of creativity and blandness. I like what you did here, I think that it's a good way to get that feeling out of you and onto canvas. Good joarb!

Thanks KJ. Starting to like that brush in my hand again though. Maybe you won't have to suffer through too many more deviations like this one. LOL

I wouldn't even say it was suffering through it! The painting convayed a real emotion to me, that's all that is realy important I think. That and skill, and you do desplay skill. I am just excited to see more!
I need to pick up a paintbrush.... I want to get good at it... It's just so hard for me. Because it's so vastly differnt than drawing.

LOL Thanks again KJ. Yeah, it took me so time to get used to a brush. But once I stopped trying to use it like a pencil, it took on a whole other life. All the basics are the same though. Contrast, and composition still rule in a painting.

I would supose that the rules of art aply to all art formats. But the skills required to execute them is so.... alien. I will pick it up again, I still have a bunch of accrilics I need to use up before I will let myself advance to oil.

I work with both, but I'm not sure that switching from one to the other is advancing though. They both require a different mind set. What's really cool though, is that you can lay down a foundation in acrylics, and then paint over it with oils to smooth things our, and add depth.

Once you get used to a brush, it's as easy to work with as a pencil. There again, it's a different mind set.

I'll think about that. I'm a big fan of what people in general do with oils, but I also realy like what Joesph Larkin does with acrlyics....

He realy is amazing. I wish I could do that, maybe someday I will. I sure do hope he's doing allright for himself, I know how hard it can be for an artist to make a living not doing commusial stuff.

That and the fact that he's moved into a new city. That's got to be hard on an artist. But yeah, I hope he's doing well too.

Compositionally, perfect path in to the center of interest. Symbolically (or inferred meaning on my part) it reminds me of my voyage to quitting smoking. Really a nicely composed and subtly executed piece.

I'm not a smoker, but I can definitely see where that meaning could be extracted from it. Thank you for the insightful comment. I'm very happy you liked it.

All right, Maestro... You still have to tell me how you managed to do that. When my muse shuts me down and my void hits despite my desire to create, I'm just foiled until it passes. Or is this one of these secrets that once you share you will have to kill me?

This is brilliant on so many levels and I do believe I shall fav it.

Jeff1966 In reply to The-Blue-Queen [2008-03-07 04:15:08 +0000 UTC]

I'll tell you, and maybe I won't have to kill you. LOL

I guess, just the urge to create is enough for me. I pick up brushes, pencils, or pens and go to town. Sometimes inspiration will hit me right in the middle of this mess making. Other times I post pictures like this one. LOL Getting started after a long time off is always hard for me, but it really shouldn't be.

I do thank you very much for the fav Krissee.
