I think that he could still be a great player.  Tebow's big mistake in his first run as a player was thinking of himself strictly as a quarterback when he could clearly play many other positions.  Jim Jensen joined the Dolphins as a quarterback in 1981, but when Dan Marino joined in 1983, Jensen became a human swiss army knife, covering kick and punt returns and playing as both a Running Back and Wide Receiver.  He has been called Miami's unsung hero.

Tebow can still come back, he is only 27.  For an example of somebody who put his career on hiatus, only to come back and perform well, look at Tommy Maddox.  He made the mistake of leaving UCLA for the pros after his Sophmore year and ended up as John Elway's backup, and went to backup role after backup role.  He got a job as an Allstate agent in 1997, and did not return to football full-time until 2000.  After being the XFL MVP in 2001, he became the starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2002 after they gave up on Kordell Stewart.  By this point, Maddox was 31.  In spite of his age, that season, in only 14 starts, he was 374-537 (64.1%) for 4,106 yards, 30 touchdowns, and only 10 interceptions and he was the comeback player of the year.  Maddox did win a Super Bowl with the Steelers, but by then, he had regressed to the point that Ben Roethlisberger was the start and having lived in Western Pennsylvania since 1999, I distinctly remember him doing the Steelers more harm than good by that point.

I hope Tim Tebow takes these lessons to heart.
