On a slightly comical note:
Wouldn't it be ironic if they sent two of their best officers to track down the deserter, reducing their forces by 3 soldiers instead of just 1,
thus loosing the battle they could have won if they'd just let the deserter go. Sounds like a funny premise for a Black Adder episode.

beautiful... this reminds me of time I had to hunt down a traitor for releasing data to the enemy, had to kill him the same way. poor guy had a family...
