Description The Corvus was originally built to provide close air support, destroying armour and artillery while allies on the ground advanced. Given the new emphasis on countering insurgency, the Corvus has been redeployed against more elusive targets: arms suppliers, training camps, rogue warlords and their closest aides.

Design Features:

- As a dedicated ground attack aircraft, the Corvus sacrifices speed for firepower and resilience. The main wing is built around internal reinforcing spars that run straight between the tips and the twin booms help strengthen the tailplane. The long and narrow air intakes are encased in a wedge that shields them from ground fire and offers further reinforcement. The heavily armoured fuselage contains the cockpit, engines, targeting systems, main gun and ammunition hopper. Compared to most jet aircraft, the Corvus has a poor top speed, rate of climb and service ceiling, but these are less important when attacking targets on the ground.

- The semi-retractable undercarriage is built to take hard landings on rougher frontline airstrips that may be attacked themselves. The front wheel is beneath the cockpit and the main wheels are in the underwing booms. The raised air intakes are less likely to ingest ground debris and the high wings reduce the risk of weapons striking obstacles.

- A large heat suppressor helps mask jet exhaust; the twin booms and tailplane also shield it from some angles. The booms are armed with flares and chaff as a defence against missiles. These were built to counter advanced weapons and make the Corvus almost immune to the cruder substitutes more often carried by insurgents.

- The main missile armament is carried on six underwing hardpoints. These were originally armed with specialised warheads, but against less advanced opponents smaller, cheaper types suffice. The six pods shown here are packed with light unguided rockets; losses in power and accuracy are countered through sheer volume of fire. The high wing puts them closer to the pilot’s eye level so aiming feels more natural and small corrections can be easily made.

- The Corvus is perhaps best known for its cannon armament. The standard 30mm is useful against mobile targets due to its high rate of fire. The less common 50mm has a lower rate of fire but longer range and hitting power, making it more effective against well defended static emplacements. Both have also seen some use against slower kinds of aircraft.

An excellent variation on the observation/attack/anti-guerrilla aircraft theme. When I saw this I immediately thought of the first time I saw the OV-10 BRONCO. That was when it was first being introduced in the early/mid 1960's. I never thought about a jet at the time instead of the twin turboprops. Great idea though. One interesting fact at that time was the possibility of a rear hatch where two Special Forces Operators could egress with parachutes. I do know if they every added this capability. I am an old Air Force Brat, and though my Father was in SAC, I really like the idea of flying one of these. I still would love to fly one. I read somewhere that some were being considered as fire bombers. This is a really cool image. Great Work!

Interesting design, even from the thumb I could see the Bronco and Frogfoot pedigree. Overall it looks like an effective design that'd work well, although the inlets look like they might suffer airflow problems at high AOA unless they had auxillary doors in the under-surface.

The Bronco and Vampire both influenced this design. There's a hint of the Sukhoi 25 here as well. I set out to create a ground attack aircraft that wasn't an obvious A-10 knockoff!

Antarasol [2014-02-22 23:01:56 +0000 UTC]

Interesting and well-thought design.

The wing profile doesn't give much ascending force. Is this intentional? I have no idea about military planes wing profiles I must admit, I just noticed the fact while watching the image.

The idea to have cheaper weapons fits IMO, since a new big war will be very expensive and countries will have to revert to cheaper weapons and equipment soon.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jflaxman In reply to Antarasol [2014-02-24 05:44:30 +0000 UTC]

You've got an eye for details! The underside of the wings would be flat, though it isn't clear from this angle due to the slightly rounded tips.

It's sometimes been said that countries prepare to fight their last wars again while ignoring new developments. Using state-of-the-art hardware designed to win another world war against insurgents has not been very cost effective and we're definitely seeing more emphasis on cheap alternatives like drones.

There's also renewed interest in smaller, cheaper strike aircraft like the Vietnam-era Bronco, one of the planes that inspired this piece. Against less advanced opponents several of them might achieve more than a single world-class tankbuster.

That is an impressive looking jet, I approve.

I love those rocket pods, loads of fun they are! Bearing down on the enemy launching a couple of those and boom ya dead!

I like the angle as well, really shows that it is kicking ass!

Sorta looks like a glider kinda, like those form World War 2 that were towed into enemy territory.

I love this world! its so screwed up! APOCALYPSE!

Keep it up!

jflaxman In reply to hunterN05 [2014-02-22 18:13:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The rocket pods are based on the ones you see on many Russian aircraft, but the plane itself owes more to older Western types like the Bronco and Vampire.

A jet-powered strike aircraft seems like overkill against insurgents - a lot of real-world armies get by just fine with turboprops! The faction this one belongs to isn't known for subtlety though.

That was a big influence! It's clearest in the wings and tailboom. There are subtler hints of the DH 100 and the Su 25 here too.

I've seen a lot of ground attack concepts that are based on the A-10. By all accounts it's a great plane but I felt like trying something different!

The Bronco wouldn't have made a bad civilian runabout. Some time back a pilot at Bankstown Airport, Sydney, had managed to score a MiG 17. It was fast by all accounts, but its economy and payload must have been terrible.

There's been talk of resurrecting the Bronco (or designing a modern equivalent) as a cheap counter-insurgency aircraft. It's a shame to hear so many were scrapped, by all accounts they did the job well.
