Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles isn't such a childish series! It's really gotten rather mature and can be enjoyed well by adults now too.

Heh, I was never really into the comics or cartoons, but I did really like the first movie. There's just something low tech and likeable about it, I dunno. Also just fun seeing baby Sam Rockwell in a small role.Β
Got to agree with the people who are saying the Bay versions are hideous - whether or not you have nostalgia goggles on, those are just unpleasant-looking designs.Β

jflaxman In reply to Viergacht [2014-09-23 00:35:17 +0000 UTC]

I was never a huge fan of the franchise but the rubber suit turtles were goofy fun. I remember the comics as being well drawn and surprisingly dark at times, though I'm not sure how they'd hold up now.

I've got bigger issues with what Bay did to two of my favourite horror films. TheΒ early scenes of his Texas Chainsaw Massacre give us a van filled with agency models pretending to be seventies stoners where the first gave us a van filled with very convincing seventies stoners. One bravely refuses a joint and after the occasional scare and a whole lot of overcooked contrivance predictably outlives the rest. The original got much of its impact fromΒ showing just how random andΒ indiscriminate violence can be, and it was pretty sickening to see a remake of the film that started theΒ teen slasher genre adopt the smug morality thatΒ crept into it over time.

I didn't bother with Bay's take on Nightmare on Elm Street and have heard nothing good about it since. I once showed the original to a partner's younger brother, and any Hollywood directors who think modern audiences can't or won't appreciate films made many years ago could learn a lot from his response!

I hate being 'that guy' but I really hate this trend of remaking movies that were perfectly good to begin with without bringing anything new that's worthwhile into it. If a remake puts it's own interesting spin on things - I think the recent Apes movies were quite good - or if the original was a diamond in the rough, sure. I'm just glad the remake of Re-Animator (possibly my all time favorite movie) as a slick tv show full of sexy 20-somethings got tanked.

Viergacht In reply to jflaxman [2014-09-26 12:03:30 +0000 UTC]

I haven't seen the second one, but the first one surprised us by its quality when we saw it. I was leery of the CGI and I guess I'd been burned by the Burton remake, which had spectacular make-up and absolutely nothing else worthwhile about it. But no, this one focused on Cesar and really made him a tragic, relatable hero.Β

Ten years agoΒ I wouldn't have been surprised to hear some people would have fond memories of the Turtles. If I'd have been told their interest would prompt a $125M blockbuster that went on to make a massive profit I'd have never believed it.
