Impressed with the Supermarine Spitfire, and a bunch of other aircraft designs flying around at the time, Professor Anton Veeblefitzer, Banzai Plane Builder(!), and insisting that a single fuselage-structure could support twin engines for extra power and performance, invented the Ve-96B "Impossible Fighter".
Powered with two reliable German DB601-45 liquid-cooled engines, and with two counter rotating propellers, power, capable of reaching over 1,750 hp with Saki injection, the IP, as it was affectionately referred to, could reach speeds up to 453 mph. At lower speeds it could easily turn inside anything that the evil Norman/British/Canadian Empire could throw into the sky!
Weapons were a potent 4 X 20 mm wing-cannon and 2 x 12.7 mm mg's nose mounted. A wide variety of models were designed that could perform functions from dive and torpedo bombing to fighter-vs-fighter and long range recon, even using a parachute for slowing the bombing-dives so the pilot could increase accuracy(see next slide).
The craft had pilot and fuel tank protection.
The oil cooler, bottom nose, was oversize to ensure no burn-out, and the radiator was a retractable armored box.
It was an aircraft carrier pilots dream, and a mechanics nightmare. It was a classic complex, over-built Veeblefitzer design. Impossible to believe! Yet..., it actually existed, and one mint condition example sits in the San Diego Imperial War Museum.
