What is the secret to immortality? You keep death from doing her job.

There is so much happening in this picture. One, it brings to life two concepts I've had for some time now. The first being that Death is a woman. Women bring life into the world, it just always made more sense to me that a woman would remove it. The second being a fragment of a character arc for a character I don't even have yet. A man is obsessed with living forever, but he's not stupid enough to attempt a headlong war with Death, so he spends a great portion of his life learning how to imprison her. If death is locked away, she can't very well take the man's life, can she?

I haven't worked out how he would defy aging yet...

Another thing I love so very, very much about this picture is the discovery of a new technique! I inked the original sketch with brushwork and had intended to leave it there. I wanted to shade it, make it pop, but my previous experience with brushed ink was that it smears when I apply my Copic markers to it, so I had been avoiding it. Today I decided that I had to, at the very least, fill in the brickwork a little and that I'd be very careful. Well, turns out, that I must have been doing something wrong because there was no smearage. That's when I went to to work on Death herself and I couldn't be more ecstatic with how she came out. Once I started filling in her robe, the highlights really popped and gave me the feel that I was going for when I started. Serendipity!

However, once again, the scan washed out a severe amount of detail. Still brainstorming solutions.
