Description
Don’t you love when the coverarts back in the 80s have nothing to do with the game itself? Take a look into Megaman1 boxart for instance, I wonder who the heck draw megaman that way… he even have a pistol (not to mention those legs, man… those legs)!
This was a NES game idea that I had, it would be heavily “a boy and his blob” inspired. You would use Jake’s transformations to search for power ups and advance the levels, Jake would also be a weareble armor like he was once or twice in the show. Finn would play very megaman-zelda2-ish; walk, jump, slash, etc, all in 8bit goodness! I tried my best to mimic the NES limitations, using 4 colors per block and 5 colors max per sprite, and the color palette is fearelly the same.
If you like what you see, why not support my art on Patreon ? I have some nice goals, like weekly videos, tutorials, live stream and much more pixel-related stuff! Check it out!See also:

Oh... Uhmmm.. Wasn't NES limited to 3 colors + transparent for sprites?
Whatever, great work with this mock-up!

There are some tricks you can do to exploit it, like megaman's face.

Yes, I find that particularly interesting how creators of old games exploited what was available to them

There are a little more subtleties to make this really more NESish. It does, however look very SNESish

That is one fantastic idea man! I love the concept and how you used jake as a ladder ... and finn armed in jake is fantastically made too ^^
BTW the evil snail is a nice touch ... is he going to be the final boss ?

Thank you very much! To be fair the "Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?!" game had some awesome sprites! Too bad the DS port made them look like crap for no reason.

The pallette was flawless, it could really be a nes game.
I've always wondered how people made animated gifs that stood one next to the other like, how do you sync them together? It's crazy well done.

About that, I start with the shorter cycles, here they are all 4 frames and then I can put that to loop; when I work on the medium cycles, I make them double, so, in this case, 8 frames (2x small cycles), and the bigger cycles I make the double of that, 16 frames (4x small cycles or 2x medium cycles). So here's a total of 16 frames all cycled up correctly.

Do you plan the content of the animations in advance, like what happens in them, or do you improvise until you've reached the desired number of frames?

I plan in advance, it's easier this way.

This style is incredible. I'd think if this came out on the NES it'd blow people's minds.

And it's pretty much viable to make something like this on the actual hardware, maybe I would need to tweak the tiles a bit so it follows the palette restrictions a little better, but other than that, very viable!
