Description This is my third version of this illustration with each done about a year apart. The little girl keeps killing her fish and this fish is seeing himself off to fishy heaven.

I'm still trying to find "my style". I read in, I think, ImagineFX magazine that a good way to see your growth is to to rework an illustration every year or so and see your improvement.

I'm battling with the decision of if I want to keep black lines in my work or digitally paint without the lines showing through. My wife likes the black lines and feels it emotes a fun cartoon feel. Maybe, I can keep the black outlines for cartoon like illustrations and do other works the other way. The only problem I have with that is I want a recognizable style and if I illustrate in different ways I won't have my unique awe factor.

Oh well, it's a conundrum. I'll post another version of this without the line work when I'm a little more adept at painting in Photoshop or Painter.

Comments, constructive criticism and critiques are always welcome.

That's so sad

A pointer about style: It sucks, it's a limitation that will make you receive few and far between jobs in the industry. Don't believe me? Check out the time difference between Madureira's runs on Marvel.

The industry doesn't want to adapt to you, it wants you to adapt to them, and that goes to everything from comics to book-covers, to animation, to mascots, everywhere.

The way to be recognizable and attractive to employers is thru technique; Ross, Hughes, Keane, etc. They don't have rules they can't avoid because that's their "style", they have a working process that gives them results of great quality with a unified feel from the contruction stage instead of focusing on details.

You're in the right track, just think more about improoving as a whole everyday and less about "finding a style" and you'll find yourself with a unified, natural and attractive technique

Wow, that actually really makes sense and helped me a lot. Thanks so much! I don't know why I never put this together before, but everything you said makes clear sense and takes the weight of finding a style off my shoulders. I like the idea of just improving all around. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on some of my other illustrations if you have time

Thanks again!

You're welcome, and yes, work at your rithm and comfort and as you keep advancing your personal technique will show thru everything in a much more natural and consistant way than a build-up "style" ever could

Ah! Sorry for such a late reply. I didn't see this message until now.

I've been hearing that a lot. I just hate to be patient with my skill level. Damn it, I want to be awesome now! LOL

Yeah, I feel bad for the fishies too My wife and I couldn't seem to keep real fish alive either so we stopped trying and just stuck the fish tank in the hall closet. We've had better luck with out of water pets.
