Haha, lots of experimenting and great commissioners who request cool stuff ;D
I really just play with shapes. Like for this I drew the circle of the red orb in the center and then started adding points and fans and bits onto the edges to make a holder for it. For weapons I usually draw the haft or handle and then try to come up with an interesting shape for the blade and then join the two together! Just lots of playing around <3
