Description
I use Photoshop, but the general strategy can be applied to many other media, digital and traditional.I realised the work-in-progress image for Wolf Mates VII made an ideal walkthrough image, as it includes all the major steps I take in painting. I've labeled them and included a description.
Feel free to post any questions if I wasn't clear enough

Heh, well, these are all the steps involved! It starts off with loose blurry smudgey colours, and then gradually gets more detailed until you have all the refinement and fur detail you want.

Hello,
I was wondering which is the 100% of the original size?
Hope to hear from you soon, Jocarra.

you should make a tutorial with the brushes, how to make em as you do, mine is just the samee all the time, and just dosnt work to draw 1 and 1 hair, it looks so ugly :S

But I don't use any special brushes. I just use the regular default brushes, the plain round ones.

Yes.
You don't even need Photoshop to paint the way I do - OpenCanvas, for example, would work just as well. Even the Facebook graffiti program could be used, even though it doesn't have a flow/pressure setting and no pressure sensitivity.
You don't need any special brushes, special filters, or special settings. You don't even need PS.
About 90% of the time, I ONLY use the default, plain, "hard/soft round" brushes. The only thing I change, as far as the brush goes, is the brush mode (multiply/screen/normal) and flow/pressure (1-50%).
The only time I use a different brush is very rare - it's part of the default set, the "spatter" brushes. I sometimes use them for fur or hair, but I most commonly use them for smudging colours for fur before I do detailing.

Yeah, it takes work and a lot of patience - it often doesn't look quite right when you start, and sometimes it never does no matter how long you work at it :S X3

Wow, this art is amazing! I wish I had enough patience and enough skill to do this. I've heard lineless drawing is hard, too.

There's actually a weird kind of freedom with lineless drawings - you don't have to worry about colouring out of the lines, but you do need to worry about filling everything in. Also, while there's lots of scary details to worry about, I find I don't worry about them as much as agonizing over getting the PERFECT lineart, for some strange reason.
You might want to try my first fur tutorial - it's a lot faster and easier

Hmm... Okay. ^^ I'm kinda playing with the idea of doing some lineless drawing, since I don't really like my colored linearts.
Okay, thanks!

I mean, I still use a sketch, but with things like this, you can see it doesn't always matter if you stay inside the lines.

horsegirl2000148 In reply to jocarra [2009-06-03 22:11:14 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I know. What I'm talking about is when you use thick, black lines and color inside of those. ^^

jocarra In reply to horsegirl2000148 [2009-06-03 22:14:13 +0000 UTC]
*nods* The worst is thin lines X3 They're so easy to colour outside of - it takes me ages to ensure lineart is fully coloured, but not outside the lines, especially if I've used thin lines :S

horsegirl2000148 In reply to jocarra [2009-06-03 22:17:47 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's really annoying. I don't think I've actually used any lines that were incredibly thin, though.

It still amazes me how much detail you can put in with so many single fur strokes. I would give up on the first hair! lol!

jocarra In reply to DaGrblz [2009-06-02 21:21:36 +0000 UTC]
X3 It's more time-consuming than just scribbling (the technique used in the first, easiest tutorial), but yields nicer results. I still will use a little bit of scribbling, but it's of course important to make it not look like that

DaGrblz In reply to jocarra [2009-06-02 21:29:50 +0000 UTC]
Lol, I see. My recent entry, the fannart of Jayfeather from the Warriors series, I used different shades and did fur by fur, "scribbling" my way in. XD I turned out nice, but not as nice as it would be if I tried. Lol.
