Description
Player class artwork for Endless Realms , a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for. Here we have ye olde classic mounted knight, ie. the living tank/unstoppable juggernaut. In this particular instance, we have a dengu (one of those adorably squat little mole people ), although often underestimated for their diminuitive size, whose tough, stocky frame actually makes them well-suited to the task. He's too small for a warhorse, so gets a battle boar instead which, I think, is actually a lot cooler

Awesome! As much as I love horses, I do think that a battle boar would be more dangerous and suited as a war steed than a horse. As for a Dengu knight on a battle boar - I just hope they're on my side!

Thanks a lot! And yeah, I like horses, too, but boars just seem like a perfect war mount for a smaller-sized knight, and it was a lot of fun to paint, to boot

You're welcome! From all I've read about boars, they will make awesome war-beasts. In fact, giant ones would easily replace horses for the larger 'sentient' species as war mounts. (One would still want horses for regular mounts, though. Better temperament. )

*chuckles* That's a serious concern. Then again, horses are sometimes known for being skittish or easily startled, yet can be trained to be effective war horses; if boars are anything as intelligent as the pigs we're familiar with, they should similarly be able to be trained to overcome some of their less desirable inclinations, such as to gore anyone intruding on their space :V

Definitely agree!
I've trained a few horses, and discovered that the more intelligent you believe they are, the more they prove you are correct.
I suspect that, if one got the boars when they were sucklings, you could raise and train them to be awesome companion mounts as well as war beasts.

*nods* Most "wild" animals can be "tamed" in a way - not as domestic animals or working animals, persay, but generally people who are in tune with the behaviour of a species can learn to work with them quite peacefully

Indeed! Just keep in mind it is a wild animal, and still has some instinctive reactions, and humans may not be aware of the triggers.

*nods* That's really what I mean. People who really "get" how a particular animal works can usually find a way to interact/coexist peacefully with them.

Not to mention deliciously alliterative

I'm getting a huge vibe from the Dwarves in the final Hobbit movie, but at the same time something that is very much not them.
This is awesome. Well done! I could never manage this.

Heh, really? I actually never saw those movies, but it kind of makes sense - high fantasy involving tough stocky guys in armour! Thanks a lot

Ah you should do! They're very good.
But yes. Dwarves with hammers and armour and stuff like that.
You're welcome!

Thanks a lot I normally struggle doing armour - lots of details and things to obsess over, haha - but I'm pretty happy with how this one came out
