Description
Eh... I feel like this probably belongs in Scraps, but I kinda wanted to show it off. You see, my current temp position is remarkably uneventful. On the first day, they really tried to hype up how crazy busy it was going to be, but I've been through a LOT of nine-hour shifts with approximately one customer per hour (requiring roughly 30 seconds of service), so not a lot really happens. This week, I finally decided to occupy myself with writing and, today in particular, drawing.Earlier this week, I came up with a new "fantasy epic" story idea which I'm tentatively calling Impure (that is really subject to change though). It's all flowing very easily too (hence how I can have what I feel is a pretty solid and diverse and LARGE main cast in roughly three days of planning). I'm loving the idea though, and although I think I'd like to keep quiet for now, I'd be delighted to hear your thoughts on what you see here. If there's a lot of positive reception, maybe we'll hear much more in the near future.
Artistically speaking, it's kind of an eyesore (many lines overlap where they don't belong, some characters are oddly proportioned and that one lady in particular has a ginormous head). But I hope you'll be forgiving. It was drawn entirely in pen on paper (the first non-tablet thing I've drawn in MONTHS), and was not edited at all (I whited out the background to make the drawn parts stand out better though, and I guess I signed it digitally, but that's it). If you consider this is exactly how I drew it on the first try, then yes, I am quite proud of it.
Finally, before anyone yells at me for coming up with new stories when I have plenty to focus on already, I'd like to add that I've also outlined two whole chapters of Rain this week alone too. Let's just say this job gives me A LOT of time to think...
Also, for commenting purposes, the characters from left to right are:
Lexie, Carlie, Sennin, Roland, Callista, Paige, Hector, Craven

Callista, the 5th from the left, I love her outfit. Where ever did you get the inspiration for it?

Ooh, this looks pretty interesting. What amazes me is that you're able to create a world, and come up with characters, in so little time. Truly, one of the signs of a skilled author and artist.
The character designs are reminiscent of the designs from many previous universes you've created, most of which I know only through the OCSC. The attention to detail really is remarkable! Callista is the most detailed, but all of them have distinguishing characteristics. Also, the names "Hector" and "Roland"? As a devoted FE player, I approve wholeheartedly. I'd love to learn more about all of them, if you get the chance to post detailed character bios (you know, between "Rain" and, um, life).
All in all, this looks pretty cool!

Creating worlds and characters in a short time; really, it's a blessing and a curse sometimes. For all my talent in conceiving neat stories quickly, I lack the additional talent in physically writing them at any kind of decent speed, making it sometimes seem like I don't really do much of anything. That said, since starting Rain, I have shown a great improvement in my level of dedication.
I've pretty much decided that there will be character bios up at some point (perhaps soon, even). It's just a matter of getting the details down in such a way that I don't spoil anything in the explanations.

Calling the cutie in the middle Callista? Wah, now I feel very important. ~
(my usual nickname is Kalista)
... That aside
I'm curious at the setting. Is that a container next to Hector?

Heh. It's always fun to find an interesting character who shares your name, isn't it? ^_^
The setting is... complicated. I do indeed intend to go into detail on this at some point in the near future, but I'm still working out a few kinks, so I don't say anything too spoilery in my explanations.
As for Hector, if you're referring to what I think you are, that's actually a sword.

Okies~
It is fun, yup. Plus, in Callista's case, her looks kinda fit what I'd like in a fantasy setting, so, easy self-identification~
... Yeah, dunnoh about her mental looks, but still. *flaiiils*
Oki doki. Looks rather heavy to handle, don't you think it'd perhaps deserve a secondary handle for dual-handed wielding? Or does he use the chain to swing it in the air? *curious*

JocelynSamara In reply to kalistina [2012-01-30 01:12:24 +0000 UTC]
Oh, it's horribly heavy and unwieldy. And what's worse, is the handle has broken off. It has a secondary handle on the blade (now the only handle), so he basically needs to utilize the chains as well to handle it pretty much at all. That STILL leaves it rather cumbersome as a weapon, but with a little bit of creativity, he can still manage to make it work... sorta.

Oh, okies. Good thing to realize you've actually put a lot of thought into it~
Kinda reminds me of Regal Bryant in Tales of Symphonia (the crippled weapon part). Though Regal's limitations are self imposed.

it looks like it would be interesting. yea the drawing isnt anything special atm but its just a rough scetch, its not supposed to be. but the designs look interesting and it seems to be a good work in progress

Is Craven holding a large hunk of metal?
Large hunks of metal beat out swords any day of the week in my book ^^

JocelynSamara In reply to Doomdragon [2012-01-29 14:57:34 +0000 UTC]
Well, technically, it IS a sword. A large hunk of flat, sharp metal. It's sort of unconventional though, even for the "excessively large sword cliche". Due to it's size and weight, an extra handle is actually built into the blade itself (look just above his hand). This is especially beneficial though, as the main handle has long since broken off (towards the top). It's certainly not an easy thing to lug around. But anyway, why it may not fit the traditional look, the weapon itself is in fact a sword, if only by strict definition.

Doomdragon In reply to JocelynSamara [2012-01-29 16:22:06 +0000 UTC]
Ahhh I see the handle, so it's almost like an artillery sword. Eh he.. Sorry that's what I call swords with the 2 handles built into the blade because of the look and feel of holding an artillery cannon. So it's like that but just 1 handle (that we can see), oh darn beware I'm going into weapon nerd mode
Looks somewhat unwieldy due to the size and just 1 handle that's placed far from the center of the blade, I imagine that if he swung it he wouldn't have much control over it's direction due to this. You may want to either extend that handle so he can hold it with 2 hands or place a second handle that's closer to the middle of the blade because right now from what it seems when he swings it it'll be swinging back and forth in his hand resulting in either him hitting the enemy dead on with the blade, hitting the enemy dead on with the flat side of the blade, or the wind catches the drag and lift and alters its direction...
Errr sorry I'm a huge bladed weapon nerd (I spent a good amount of time figuring out if a gunblade was possible, it is it just would be very VERY fragile) so I'm sorry if I came off as a bit critical or flat out criticizing >>;

It's no big deal. I appreciate the commentary. ^_^
That said, I don't intend to change much about it. For story purposes, it's kind of supposed to be unwieldy. The more inconvenient, the better.

Well then I can safely say you've succeeded, that sword is going to be flying almost everywhere it's not supposed to... well I guess if you want it to do that then it's flying everywhere it's supposed to? Urrrghhh paradoxical phrasing x3x;

I'm sure with some more work it can measure up to COH:FF without the FF. At least that is how I percieve this story. And to be honest seeing a more fantasy/steam-punk story from you will make me really excited since finding a good one isn't common these days. I look forward to talking to you more about it and see if you feel strongly about it. For some reason Callista and Craven make me the most interesting. Really looking forward to learning about them.

The story is probably more fantasy than steampunk. I normally find I like the modern FF8-esque style setting for my fantasy stories, but this is decidedly lower tech than my standard fare. There will be technology, but it'll be a little on the light side (I guess, realistically, making it kind of steampunk, actually).
Either way, I'm glad you're interested in learning more. I am pretty interested in sharing more in time. ^_^

That will be something to be excited about. Hope it turns out to be up there with the classics.
I also enjoy the approach on technology. I mean the development of society is also a metaphor on the heroes journey. Such as FF8's technology being a backdrop on the infamous Sorceress wars. I still think it was a brilliant move.

I can't figure out what it might even BEGIN to be about... however, this does look intriguing! I'd like to know more about it, if you decide to share.
And for what it's worth, I don't think anyone 'has a big head', or any other impurities ( punny
) - for a straight-pen drawing, you've done amazingly well indeed!

The third one from the right, I feel, has an excessively big head. Perhaps it's just me.
I'm glad you're intrigued though. I think there's a very good chance I'll be going into more detail and share info on it in the near future. The reception seems to be positive so far, and I'm still just digging it. Mostly, I just need to figure out how to explain things in a non-spoilery way first. So, thank you for your interest. ^_^
