The military situation isn't all that bad, really: The nation's leaders are safe, and, corollarily, the strongest ponies in Equestria are still on the board; the Crystal Empire remains untaken, and is situated perfectly to threaten the northern flank of any assault made upon the heartland of Equestria, from a superb set of crystaline fortifications; the enemy commander has completely surrendered the element of surprise (the most important element of all in a military coup), he has revealed the exact composition of his forces, and has completely alienated the population he plans to subdue by being a complete ass to the most honored heroines in all of ponydom: it is as if he slapped the staff of St. Peter and the artifacts of Calvary out of the hands of six of the the founding fathers, resurected to protect America, while simultaneously bucking Paul Revere in the mouth . Sunstripe has also failed to so much as threaten Equestria's allies (I would be surprised Saddle Arabians did not respond in some way, and the Griffons will certainly be pissed that their trade in desserts with Equestria has been interrupted by an act of war). The man's second in command is an ass that has zero credibility with her men, his chain of command is obviously convoluted, and he has seemingly ignored every military asset in Equestria besides the elements of harmony: he has not cut the lines of communication, he has not hurt his enemy's chain of command, he has left the navy intact and has attacked absolutely no military or civilian target of import.
