*sighs* Yep, I'm starting to get the vibe of the vengeance-seeking, obsessed and possibly genocidal version of Shining Armor that often shows up in a lot stories where changelings are involved. Which makes me think that changelings are probably going to be shown "not all being so bad". I know I'm supposed to feel sad for him that he's like this way, but it's just so commonplace in fics with him and changelings it's kind of a surprise when he's not. And no, that's not me saying it's justified, it's just I read a lot of fan stories.
Honestly, though, here's my problem: Shining Armor just doesn't make good for a 'protector of his sister and wife, Knight in Shining Armor' kind of guy. Not only because Equestria's pretty much a matriarchy, but Twilight and Cadance are not the ones who need protecting. They are perfectly capable of defending themselves. THEY saved HIM. He kinda lost all his rights to the "knight in shining armor" schtick quite some time ago.

Yeah, but for me at least, I like to see Shining Armor having the supposed integrity and understanding of what is wrong already. That would speak far greater of his character instead of turning him into a cardboard cutout obsessed, blood hungry genocidal fucknut that dates back as early as 'Pocahontas' for the sake of drama. And the excuse is almost always, "oh, well of course he'd hold a grudge against them", except there's a big friggin difference between having a character holding a justified grudge and them acting like a genocidal nut case. Huge difference.
But what really bothers me is the sheer lack of consequences. In real life, if someone "goes too far" in this matter, they can't just called out on it and a face heel turn. When it comes to this, when you've crossed that line, you have crossed it and have to pay the price. Shining Armor almost never has to face the realistic consequences of his actions in these stories; he gets a fav heel turn and that suddenly makes it all okay and he gets off Scott free. So I basically have to watch his character be butchered without the cathartic satisfaction of seeing him get rightfully punished. That is unbelievably frustrating.

On your comment: I get the feeling that this is going to be one of the "he realizes he's starting to go too far before he's fully crossed the line" stories. Kind of like Picard in Star Trek: First Contact.

Yes I have read it from the beginning. I read it back when it ended shortly after Trixie got freaked out by the guy saying he was going to kill Twilight. Then I forgot abot it until a day or two ago.

And like I said, I get the feeling that in THIS story, Shining Armor is going to rein himself in (pun not intended) before he goes too far in seeking vengeance.

Oh, why not? By now, it's been so overdone with Shining now, it's kind of expected. Nowadays, it's much of a shock when he isn't porteayed as a hyper paranoid, unhinged and genocidal fucknut in this fandom.

What really bothered me about season 4 (though it didn't keep me from enjoying it) is how the writers seemed to go out of their way to prevent these two from sharing any screen time together. He wasn't even MENTIONED in "Three's a Crowd", and you'd think that however happy Twilight might have been to see Cadance, she would've at least been a little disappointed that Shining couldn't come with her. But nothing, not even a throwaway line saying where he was (it'd be as simple as saying that one of them had to stay in the Crystal Empire to defend it). Heck, Shining Armor only appeared in the third-to-last episode of the season and the second part of the finale, and barely did anything. He got his magic drained by Tirek really quickly, and while I completely expected that, it would've been nice if he had actually tried to defend the Princesses in the throne room. Him reacting to Discord's betrayal didn't really mean much, since they had never interacted on-screen (which also makes me wonder if they encountered each other the first time Discord was freed).
I really hope they address this in season 5. Give Shining and Cadance some heartwarming moments together. Heck, take it a step further and have Shining Armor feel upset with himself over his constant failures (maybe even reveal how he responded to the threats of Nightmare Moon and Discord). Just... their introduction was meant to show us how much they loved each other, and ever since then, it seems like the writers have been trying to AVOID showing that.

I actually believe that. It's not uncommon for artists to channel their own emotions in order to draw specific scenes. Some also make the facial expressions themselves as they try to draw them. Artists can get pretty invested in their work like that

Agreed strongly. Especially since the whole "Canterlot Wedding" Season finale was practically out of my childhood playtime stories, with the brave princess saving her beloved noble knight from the wicked witch. So whenever I see these goofy renditions of him...I dunno how to describe it. It just...Doesn't resonate as strongly.
I like the adorkable Shining Armour from the comics, I love the Knightly Shining Armour we have here but I really don't care for the CheeseFactory Shining Armour.
