I love your style of painting a subject and then letting abstract strokes sprout from the sides of the figure. Truly magnificent.

As usual Joe, "Wonderful Work!" Great dynamic energy and the use of colour is fabulous, especially the skin tones and the scrapes and splatters in the highlights and shadows, which gives texture and a sense of movement.
I like how the figure breaks up an the almost symetrical balance of light and shadow. Maybe I am reading a little too much into it, but it seems as if she is moving into the light and leaving the darkness behind her. Trancending not only the physical, but a spiritual evolution. That balance of light and shadow could also be symbolic of human nature, spirituality both fighting for dominancy. If not, you're welcome to use this in your rationale.

I truly love it. It's both inspirational and aspirational. If I weren't so broke I'd buy it. Damned recession.

Hey,
Thanks for the detailed analysis
I don't usually had a meaning in mind before I paint something, but I typically find meaning in it afterward. I really like your take on it and can definitely appreciate what you see in it!

And yeah, the recession sucks. It's a good thing I have a regular full-time job; if I was just making a living from my art, it would be a very tough time.

You're welcome, it's my pleasure.

Is your job within the art field?

joereimer In reply to roren001 [2009-08-28 02:29:49 +0000 UTC]

It is... I teach junior high and senior high art (as well as some math and computers). It's probably the most stable job you can get as an artist. Even if I could make a full-time career out of selling my art, I love teaching art and it would be very difficult to give up.

Very cool! When I was in high school teaching art was my first career choice. Unfortunately life had other plans while I was having fun. But now I am back in the art field somewhat (Graphic Design) and my goal is college professor. I love seeing the faces of people when they've learned something new and I am the instrument of that discovery.

It may sound arrogant, but I love the feeling of being an inspiration to my students. I mean, I am continually striving to be a better teacher of the actual skills, but it's a great feeling when I know my students want to impress me because they look up to me as an artist. Again, I know that probably sounds horribly arrogant, but it's something that I've just been able to achieve in the last couple years.
I personally have no desire to teach at the college or university level, at least at this point. I can definitely see the appeal in it though. I guess the biggest issue with teaching art at the junior high and high school level is that not every student actually wants to be there and they become a behaviour problem (although, more so in classes like math or social studies). You don't really get that at the post secondary level.

I don't think it's arrogant whatsoever. It's a legitimate feeling of accomplishment and I understand what your talking about. Kudos to Joe for being an inspiration and educating our youth.

Thanks Linda.
This was an attempt at incorporating some more traditional skin tones, while maintaining my overall style. I'm really happy with how it turned out and am fairly certain I'm going to continue using this type of skin tone.

Thanks I was trying to do something a little more traditional as far as skin tone, but wanted to keep with my "messy" style.
