How long was the exposure on this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

John-Peter In reply to imakenopics [2013-09-30 04:25:40 +0000 UTC]

This information are on the EXIF: 30/1. It means i used a 30 seconds exposure to do this photo
I put my camera on a tripod and let it capture the scene for a certain time. Long exposure is a fun way of photography

Haha, thanks, btw, what brand tripod did you use? I'm going to Costa Rica this summer with my brand new DSLR camera, but I want something portable. lol

Actually i'm using a very very old Vanguard VT-131 tripod, but i'll buy a Manfrotto MKC3 H01 as soon i can
Here's a video with this tripod: www.youtube.com/watch?feature=…

John-Peter In reply to BobGrayWolf [2013-09-30 04:00:04 +0000 UTC]

I like the green colours in this. The smoothing effect of the water (with a ND-filter I suppose?) is nice as well.

I might have gotten a bit closer so as to not include the soil on the bottom left of the picture or the brownish stone to the right. Also the ND-effect is nice, but the smoothness is a bit too much, a little bit less would have given more vibrance to the picture to match the vivid greens.

John-Peter In reply to NineFireStar [2013-09-29 18:43:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your feedback, i appreciate it
About the ND-filter, i don't used it... Actually i'm needing one And about the "smoothness" and the effect in the water, it was caused by a long exposure. I used a 30 seconds time, in reason of the bad light(i did this photo in half-night conditions) for give a good exposure.
As i did this photo in RAW file, the "ND-filter" effect was in the post-processing, where i edited the highlights. And the last thing: the "soil on the bottom left" was simple: i was in rock above the waterfall, and was, basically, impossible to take the photo without it.

NineFireStar In reply to John-Peter [2013-09-29 19:03:44 +0000 UTC]

Ah I see. I am always conflicted about whether or not to crop photos afterwards to achieve desired framing when my lens won't do (I often use a fixed 50 mm), but I guess that could be done. Maybe some purists would frown on that but it seems that in our day and age manipulation is becoming less of an issue and more of a necessity. Good work anyhow.

John-Peter In reply to NineFireStar [2013-09-29 19:08:16 +0000 UTC]

Exact. Here i used my simple 18-55mm kit lens, often neglected. I see the "manipulation" as a necessity, as you say.
Take a photo without any edit is like you do a drawing in black-and-white. With the "editing programs", you paint it. You bring it the real life, but need to know how to use it.
Try use a wide-angle lens, such 20mm or less. Is better to take landscape photos
