Description
It is Saturday evening for Holly and Xiulan, and they are in the the back garden revelling in the summer warmth.

They had spent most of the afternoon in Holly's bedroom having a great time modeling the new underwear Holly had acquired from the trip to Gemini's Lingerie that morning.

Then they had dinner, which consisted of a very nice salad prepared by Holly's father that received plenty of compliments from everyone. Immediately after the dinner plates were cleared away, all four occupants of the Hewson house got into a rather deep debate about whether or not Holly's father can be considered to have 'cooked' dinner since there was no real baking, frying, or anything else involving heat used in the preparation. The discussion ended with Holly asking her father if, next week, he would make dinner for them all again but this time it must be something that both sides of the debate would definitely consider 'cooking', to which Peter Hewson eventually agreed.

Having had a chuckle at Holly's dad's reluctant agreement, the two teenagers grab a cold drink and go outside to bask in the evening sunshine, first removing their respective jeans and skirt in order to enjoy the warmth on their bare legs.

Out in the garden, a blackbird is singing on a nearby roof, and Holly and Xiulan feel the joy of being young and in love. Life right now, they feel, is simply sublime. They sit on the swing-seat and take in the beauty of the moment.

After some time enjoying the serenity of sitting next to the most beautiful person she knows, Holly stands up and stretches her legs. She looks at Xiulan and smiles as a strong surge of affection sweeps over her. She kneels at her girlfriend's feet and looks up at her face. "What are you thinking?" Holly asks.

She puts a hand on Xiulan's leg, which receives a small moan of appreciation from the other girl before she answers Holly's enquiry: "I am thinking how super awesome this minute is being for me," Xiulan says with a smile. "This is a perfect day and place. I wish for it is going this way forever."

Holly pats Xiulan's leg tenderly. "I agree," she says. "I want this moment to go on forever with us being in love and having each other close, and nothing ever changing."

Xiulan sighs serenely and a peaceful but connected silence descends on the two girls for a few moments until Xiulan's expression changes and a slight frown begins to creep over her face.

"What's the matter?" Holly says as she notices the slight change in her partner's features.

Xiulan looks down at Holly, her smile less bright than it was a few seconds ago. "This must go on forever, I agree to you for that, but I must change one thing of it. One thing, Holly."

She pauses, collecting her thoughts and taking the time to put them into words, and Holly looks at her quizzically. "What would you want to change, Xiu?" she prompts.

Xiulan sighs but, unlike the previous sigh, there is more weight to it. "I miss father. We, me and gran, we have not seen him since five years now. I zoom call at school some times but that does not count. He must come to Yoo-Kay and see me soon, he must! This is what I must change."

Holly stays silent. She has heard Xiulan explain the situation with her father a couple of times but has never pressed her to discuss it in detail yet. As far as she knows, Zheng Jiahao is a very successful businessman in Hong Kong. He pays for Xiulan's school fees and sends very generous amounts of money for Xiulan's birthdays and whenever she or her grandmother need something essential but ever since Xiulan was sent to the UK to live with her grandmother in Mettleham at 8 years old, Xiulan has not seen him in person. She writes to him regularly, allowing her to practise her Chinese characters and keep them fresh in her mind, but she only receives very occasional letters in reply. She has tried asking her grandmother why she is separated in this way but has received either angry responses telling her not to bring the subject up again or vague answers that do not provide any more information. Holly feels that Xiulan will eventually tell her everything, her thoughts and feelings about the situation and not merely the basic facts, but now is perhaps not the right time. It clearly weighs on Xiulan's mind and Holly feels talking about it will certainly help, but only when she is ready to do so.

She looks deep into Xiulan's eyes, hoping that the sympathy and yearning to do something to help the situation is obvious. She smiles comfortingly and pats Xiulan's leg again. "One day, Xiu, one day..."

The rooftop blackbird begins another chorus of its song and the two girls gaze at each other as they listen to it, feeling that words are not required at this time.
