Hi, I was looking on Google for "how to make a cosplay buckler" and your tutorial came up in the results.

It looks good, but - I'm visually impaired and I can't read the bottom panel: I can see that there's *something* there: I  eventually made out "leather buckler", which is exactly what I want to find out how to do, but I've no change with the rest.

Please, is there any chance of getting clearer instructions?

Thanks,

Athene

Here is what's written in that section:

"How to make a leather buckler

Leather bucklers aren't as rare as some might think. The Scottish Targe is a solid leather shield with a large spike in it's center. Many other shields from around the world use hardened, thickened leather. By smoking a hide for an etended time leather will contract and thicken, up to about 1.5" thick.

Once the leather has contracted and shrunk, cut it into the same shape as described in the section on wooden bucklers. There is one key difference between leather and wooden bucklers: leather bucklers need a rim support to keep the leather from fraying at the edges. The rim would need to be sturdy enough to handle impact and tight enough to keep the leather under control.

This is an example of the Targe, Scotland's version of the buckler. In the center is a large spike, which makes the shield more of a weapon than many other shield versions. This is the most common leather shield today."

Please keep in mind that this was from a while ago, so my knowledge is more expanded now than when I made this tutorial. Targes are 'similar' to bucklers, and I'm including some links that have good additional information about making shields and how to harden leather.

While most of this information is for larger shields, you can scale some of this information down to a buckler size.

actually I've tested by bucklers, and they can stop a full force sword blow, so I'll save my money and make my own. but it is interesting and heartwarming to see that so many other are into historical swordsmanship that there are so many sites dedicated to just the equipment.

I've only just seen your reply  and I saw it on your profile, not mine!

As soon as I'd sent my thanks, I realised there was something else I meant to say - but I couldn't find your message to add a ps to it  I couldn't find my sent messages to work from that end, either.  I only just thought to put your name into search.

Anyway, what I meant to add before was: I'm assembling an amazon-type costume for photoshoots [realistic amazon, not Hollywood style!] and a buckler would be exactly the right size - it'll only be cardboard and craft foam, but even a real one would probably be light enough, and it can be used offensively - especially as I plan to put a [foam] pike on the boss!

I'm not young enough or fit enough to be into LARP, so it's the look that matters.

I found an interesting YouTube video on the different types of bucker, if you'd be interested:
