I had been working alongside the PWF ‘The Pokemon Wildlife Federation’ for about 3 months. We were investigating a number of cases where Pokemon had been abandoned and needed rescue.
One of the more unusual cases was reported early one morning in the middle of summer.
I grabbed my pack and headed out to the Helipad. I was met by the young helicopter pilot Lucy and her partner Alison. Many Pokemon are abandoned by trainers who feel they can’t cope with the high demands and needs it takes to care for them.
We flew over the dunes for about 45 minutes before Lucy called out over the headset. Looking down we could clearly see what it was. It was a Kangaskhan.
I could see she had a joey in her pouch, judging by the size it must be about 1-2 years old. In this state, she could be dangerous, so it wasn’t safe to land. Alison decided to take the shot from the helicopter. It’s a challenging shot as the winds make it very hard to accurately aim, but she had quite a bit of experience. With a loud pop of compressed air, the dart hit the Kangaskhan in the side where her scales were smaller. I was concerned she might fall forward into the baby, but she rolled on her side and sank into the soft sand.
We set to work. The baby was carefully taken and placed in a carry box while Lucy and I attached a fabric brace to her arms and legs. This allowed us to hook cables to the Helicopter and safely get her off the ground.
Within the hour we were up and taking a very sleepy and dehydrated Kangaskhan back to civilization…

Kangaskhan is a tough one, vertical-bipedal designs with short legs are always a challenge to make feel real! I hope you all like it!
